This work employs an eclectic mix of structuralist and post-structuralist theories in a doomed attempt to discover the symbolic logic at work in Zechariah 1-8's surreal narrative world. Lengthy analyses of Zechariah's intra- and intertextual logic, or lack thereof, are presented. It is finally concluded that Zechariah lacks a concrete symbolic logic, defies grammatical conventions and is 'unreadable' as it stands-and always was this way. One suggestion is that it was the intent of the author, conceived of in a postmodern way, to produce such a work. It is finally concluded that the 'post-prophetic' age of Hebrew literature has much in common with the postmodern.

This work by Mark Boda provides insightful commentary on Zechariah, with great sensitivity to its historical, literary, and theological dimensions. If Zechariah's vision report (Zechariah 1.8-6.8) reflects the seer's visionary experience, how does that impact our understanding of the gradual growth of the text? Lena-Sofia Tiemeyer builds on the work done in her previous book Zechariah and His Visions (Bloomsbury-T&T Clark, 2014), to demonstrate that the visionary material forms the primary textual layer. The oracular texts constitute chronologically later interpretations. Zechariah and/or later authors/editors sought guidance in the earlier vision accounts, and the oracular material reflects these endeavours. Tiemeyer's investigation is guided by the question: what is the latter material doing with the former? Is it enforcing, contradicting, or adding to it? Using a ratio composed of the difference between the intratexts and intertexts of Zech 1-8, Tiemeyer shows how this ratio is higher in the oracular material than in the visionary material. This difference points to the different origin and the different purpose of the two sets of material. While the earlier vision report draws on images found primarily in other biblical vision reports, the later oracular material has the characteristics of scribal interpretation. By drawing on earlier material, it seeks to anchor its proposed interpretations of the various vision accounts within the Israelite textual tradition. It is clear that the divine oracles were added to give, modify, and specify the meaning of the earlier vision report.

How do otherwise ordinary people become perpetrators of genocide? Why are groups targeted for mass killing? How do groups justify these terrible acts? Interpersonal Prominence and International Presence focuses on the construction and translation of diplomatic discourse (DD) for conveying a message suggesting uncertainty and capable of being read in a number of ways. After a summary and an analysis of its characteristics, the book provides a definition of DD, showing that implicit DD is marked with an interpersonal prominence among its three meta-functions from the perspective of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). The book then gives a definition of implicitness, proposes a lexical model and identifies Lexicogrammatical Metaphor (LGM) as the linguistic mechanism of generating implicitness in DD via intralingual translation, and if necessary, interlingual translation. After this, a case study of DD generated around the 2001 Sino-US Air Collision incident is provided, which is used to establish a descriptive and explanatory three-dimensional model that is capable of providing textual accounts of translational treatments in intralingually configuring implicitness in DD and interlingually re-expressing it. This model consists of three components, namely linguistic composition, interactional dynamics, and perlocutionary imaging. Among them, perlocutionary imaging prevails over the other two in constructing and translating implicitness in DD.
