Synopsis Al-Maqasid by : Nawawī

AL-MAQASID FAMOUS FIQH BOOKS like al-Maqasid have stood the test of time because of their sheer usefulness. Compact enough to be memorized by students becoming scholars, al-Maqasid contains hundreds of rulings of personal Islamic law distilled from the most commonly asked and answered questions in schools and mosques from the time of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) down to Imam Nawawi. Widely considered the best medium-size handbook available in English for teaching the basics of Islam from a traditional perspective, this new edition has been revised and updated with a full complement of notes on a number of contemporary Muslim issues, and three major essays have been appended on why Muslims follow madhhabs, hadiths the mujtahid Imams lacked, and the place of Sufism in Islam. NUH HA MIM KELLER has studied Islamic jurisprudence, hadith, and other traditional sciences with sheikhs in Syria and Jordan since 1981. He lives and teaches in Amman. Cover: At the far Western end of Muslim lands, facing across the Atlantic, this maqam at Safi is a metaphor, in its way, of Sacred Knowledge as the redoubt of the believer between the land of this world and the sea of eternity

Synopsis The Accessible Conspectus by : Steven (Musa) Furber

For centuries, Abu Shuja al-Asfahani's legal primer "Matn al-Ghayat wa-l-Taqrib" ("The Ultimate Conspectus") has been a standard text for introducing students of the Shafii school of Islamic law to the full range of basic legal issues. Students will often start their studies by reading it from a basic commentary with their instructor. Many students will read it again from more advanced commentaries as they progress in their mastery of the subject. This volume presents an amiable commentary that makes Abu Shuja's primer accessible to new students. It uses contemporary language and examples to help readers build a sound foundation in Islamic law. "The Accessible Conspectus" is a perfect companion to "The Ultimate Conspectus."

Synopsis The Apocalyptic Letter to the Galatians by : James M. Scott

One “apocalyptic” reading of Paul’s letter to the Galatians has been attempted before and is now widely accepted, but that reading is not based on a thorough engagement with Jewish apocalyptic traditions of the Second Temple period. In this book, James M. Scott argues that there is an essential continuity between Galatians and Paul’s Jewish past, and that Paul uses the apocalyptic Epistle of Enoch (1 Enoch 92–105) as a literary model for his own letter. Scott first contextualizes the Epistle of Enoch using the entire Enochic corpus and explores the extensive similarities (and some significant differences) between the Enochic tradition and early Stoicism. Then he turns to deal specifically with Paul’s letter to the Galatians, showing that, despite their obvious differences, the two apocalyptic letters have some remarkable features in common as well. This approach to the interpretation of Galatians fundamentally stands to change the way biblical scholars understand Paul’s letter and the gospel that he preached. Paul is “within Judaism,” if the net for what is included in “Judaism” is wide enough to encompass the Enochic tradition.

Synopsis Lucid Dreaming by : Pamela Cohn

"In these engaging, challenging and beguiling dialogues, Pamela Cohn expertly draws from her subjects, personal biography and conceptual intent, process and nearly subconscious motivation, personal revelation and political mission. The result is a work that not only provides a road map to the furthest regions of cinematic possibility in the early 21st century but one whose spirited back-and-forth inspires the reader to think anew about artistic possibility." —Scott Macaulay, editor-in-chief of Filmmaker Magazine “Pamela Cohn has curated and conducted a series of interviews that simultaneously invite you to turn the page, and pause for a moment of reverie. Her interviews furrow the grounds where sensibilities become cinema, and attitudes become forms." —Luke Moody Lucid Dreaming is an unprecedented global collection of discussions with documentary and experimental filmmakers, giving film and video its rightful place alongside the written word as an essential medium for conveying the most urgent concerns in contemporary arts and politics. In these long-form conversations, film curator and arts journalist Cohn draws out the thinking of some of the most intriguing creators behind the rapidly developing movement of moving-image nonfiction. The collection features individuals from a variety of backgrounds who encounter the world, as Cohn says, “through a creative lens based in documentary practice.” Their inspirations encompass queer politics, racism, identity politics, and activism. The featured artists come from a multiplicity of countries and cultures including the U.S., Finland, Serbia, Syria, Kosovo, China, Iran, and Australia. Among those Cohn profiles and converses with are Karim Aïnouz, Khalik Allah, Maja Borg, Ramona Diaz, Samira Elagoz, Sara Fattahi, Dónal Foreman, Ja’Tovia Gary, Ognjen Glavonic, Barbara Hammer, Sky Hopinka, Gürcan Keltek, Adam and Zack Khalil, Khavn, Kaltrina Krasniqi, Roberto Minervini, Terence Nance, Orwa Nyrabia, Chico Pereira, Michael Robinson, J. P. Sniadecki, Brett Story, Deborah Stratman, Maryam Tafakory, Mila Turajlic, Lynette Wallworth, Travis Wilkerson, and Shengze Zhu. Can nonfiction film be defined? How close to reality can or should documentary storytelling be, and is film and video in its less restrictive iterations “truer” than traditional narratives? How can a story be effectively conveyed? As they consider these and many other questions, these passionate, highly articulate filmmakers will inspire not only cinema enthusiasts, but activists and artists of all stripes.

Synopsis The Evident Memorandum by : Musa Furber

This volume presents an original commentary for Al-Tadhkirah (The Memorandum), a legal primer for Islamic Law according to the later scholars of the Shāfiʿī school by Ibn al-Mulaqqin, an Egyptian scholar who died in 804AH/1401CE. The commentary introduces essential evidence for the core issues of Islamic Law from its primary sources (the Quran, Sunnah, legal analogy, and scholarly consensus). The commentary is based on Ibn al-Mulaqqin's legal commentaries (Sharḥ Mukhtaṣar al-Tabrīrzī, Khulāṣat al-fatāwī, and ʿUjālat al-muḥtāj) and works on legal hadiths (Tuḥfat al-muḥtāj, Mukhtaṣar al-Badr al-munīr, and Al-Badr al-munīr). The Evident Memorandum helps explain why Islamic Law includes specific topics and the essential evidence behind the Shāfiʿī school's opinion. It will be most beneficial to readers who are already familiar with Islamic Law and jurisprudence.

Synopsis Epistle to the Ephesians by : Brooke Foss Westcott

This book was published in 1906 by Brook Foss Westcott (1825-1901). This edition is edited to emphasize the English instead of the Greek. We have Greek=English Interlinear so that a layperson can follow Dr. Westcott's brilliant exegesis of the text. These are NOT scanned pages as image pdf. These texts are OCR; removed page headers; spelled checked; added italics and bold fonts; added Greek; added Hebrew and added Biblical cross-references. This Biblical commentary DOES NOT contain Introductions, but verse by verse with table of contents. B. F. Westcott's classic commentary on the Greek version of St. Paul's letter to the Ephesians. Contains extensive verse-by-verse exegetical commentary, as well as multiple “dissertations” on various subjects relating to the epistle. An exegetical classic by a well-respected scholar. Long out of print, it deserves the same attention as Westcott's work in Johannine literature.
