Synopsis The Employer, the Wage Earner, and the Law of Love (Classic Reprint) by : Charles H. Watson

Excerpt from The Employer, the Wage Earner, and the Law of Love The writer is quite aware of at least two criticisins which will be offered concerning this essay. Some will not be able to agree with What they would call, the mixing of business and religion, and regret the fact that a more comprehensive discussion of the present labor problem is not given. The only answer that can be given is that the writer has presented his firm conviction in the light of research and study. Moreover, he feels that no other conclusion can be logical without distorting or evading the prem ises of Christianity. The fact that this view is not readily accepted by the majority is sufficient justification for devoting so much of the discussion to this phase of the question. Discussions of the labor problem in books, magazines, journals, bulletins and other periodicals are almost innumerable, yet very few of them attempt to say what shall be the attitude of the individual employer toward his men in the light of Christ's teachings. This, the writer has attempted to do. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Synopsis The Wage Earner by : John Mitchell

Excerpt from The Wage Earner: And His Problems No one can doubt but that the reading habit is firmly established among the American people. We read and we read - at home, on the street, in the street car, on the train, in places of work; we read as we eat, as we talk, as we walk, as we wait. Daily we consume tons and tons of printed matter. This reading habit of ours is of vital significance and effect in determining what we are and what we would be. When first we enter the world of books by the road of the a, b, c's, we come into a wider and greater world of realities and a realm of imagery. Beginning in childhood with the fairy-land and the make-believe, we may go further and further into the world of books and thought, and may there find and know men and women - all that they were or dreamed, or strove and agonized to be. In that world mind calls unto mind across all ages, the great and noble of all times speak simply and clearly to anyone who will hear, truths of life and work, truths born of experience and wisdom; and yet do all Americans realize that this reading habit is the talisman that admits them to communion and companionship with the immortals? Or is the talisman prostituted to less worthy purposes? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Synopsis The Relation of Labor to the Law of Today (Classic Reprint) by : Lujo Brentano

Excerpt from The Relation of Labor to the Law of Today The fact that we must go to Germany for the best account of English trades unions, which is contained in Dr. Brentano's "Labor Guilds of the Present," of which this work, as to quantity of matter, is an abridgment, as to extent of ground covered, an enlargement, may at first thought cause surprise. This fact is not owing wholly or mainly to the German habit of research. It has a deeper cause. The classical political economy of England, prevalent also in this country, has been built up almost exclusively on the side of capital and the capitalist, and is full of theories and assumptions. Writers who have worked upon the structure have been mainly bankers, capitalists, or doctrinaire professors. This accounts for its capitalistic and theoretical character. In this country we have produced as yet few or no original investigators in the economic field. "With few exceptions the works produced in the United States have been prepared as text-books by authors engaged in college instruction, and therefore chiefly interested in bringing principles previously worked out by English authors within the easy comprehension of undergraduate students." Synopsis More Than a Labour of Love by : Meg Luxton

Based on participant observation and in-depth interviews, this book describes the work women do in their homes, caring for children and partners, and maintaining the house. It shows how their lives are shaped by domestic responsibilities and challenges the ways in which their work is neither recognized nor valued. Arguing that the work they do is socially necessary and central to the economy, it calls for a transformation of current social and economic relations.

Synopsis Private Government by : Elizabeth Anderson

Why our workplaces are authoritarian private governments—and why we can’t see it One in four American workers says their workplace is a “dictatorship.” Yet that number almost certainly would be higher if we recognized employers for what they are—private governments with sweeping authoritarian power over our lives. Many employers minutely regulate workers’ speech, clothing, and manners on the job, and employers often extend their authority to the off-duty lives of workers, who can be fired for their political speech, recreational activities, diet, and almost anything else employers care to govern. In this compelling book, Elizabeth Anderson examines why, despite all this, we continue to talk as if free markets make workers free, and she proposes a better way to think about the workplace, opening up space for discovering how workers can enjoy real freedom.
