This report describes a study jointly conducted by the University of Wyoming and the Wyoming Department of Transportation to examine the effect of construction Profilograph Index (PI) values on long-term roughness measurements of concrete pavements. The objectives of this study were to determine if increased initial pavement smoothness had any lasting effects on the pavement smoothness. The study consisted of selecting 175 test sections in eight different interstate projects, obtaining construction and roughness data, compiling the data in a computerized data base, and conducting statistical analysis. The analysis resulted in the observation that when the initial roughness of concrete sections are less than 7 in. per mile, a slightly rougher section does not necessarily deteriorate faster than a slightly smoother section.

The primary objective of this study was to develop, implement, and evaluate a Level 1 performance-related specification (PRS) for the construction of a jointed plain concrete (JPC) pavement in the State of Wisconsin. The research entailed a thorough evaluation of the construction quality levels achieved on recent Wisconsin JPC projects and the formulation of a Level 1 PRS using the results of the quality evaluation and defined Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) pavement practices as a basis. Feedback from WisDOT and the contractor indicated that this first PRS implementation in Wisconsin was successful, particularly with respect to the layouts of lots and sublots. Several suggestions were received to improve and streamline the PRS process.

This second edition of Concrete Pavement Design, Construction, and Performance provides a solid foundation for pavement engineers seeking relevant and applicable design and construction instruction. Addressing the interactions between the different design and construction variables and techniques this book illustrates best practices for constructing economical, long life concrete pavements. The book proceeds in much the same way as a pavement construction project. First, different alternatives for concrete pavement solutions are outlined. The desired performance and behaviour parameters are identified. Next, appropriate materials are outlined and the most suitable concrete proportions determined. The design can be completed, and then the necessary construction steps for translating the design into a durable facility are carried out. Although the focus reflects highways as the most common application, special features of airport, industrial, and light duty pavements are also addressed. Use is made of modeling and performance tools such as HIPERPAV and LTPP to illustrate behavior and performance, along with some case studies. As concrete pavements are more complex than they seem, and the costs of mistakes or of over-design can be high, this is a valuable book for engineers in both the public and private sectors.

The Concrete Pavement (CP) Road Map is a comprehensive and strategic plan for concrete pavement research that will guide the investment of research dollars for the next several years. It will result in technologies and systems that help the concrete pavement community meet the paving needs of today, and the as-yet unimagined paving challenges of tomorrow. In short, the CP Road Map will result in a new generation of concrete pavements for the 21st century.

With advancements in materials, equipment, placement procedures, and project management techniques, the construction and rehabilitation of concrete pavements can be effectively accomplished under traffic. Many projects have been constructed under varying levels of traffic, ranging from temporary closures to the maintenance of high traffic volumes adjacent to or through the projects. However, the current state of the practice in constructing or rehabilitating concrete pavements under traffic relies primarily on a few high-profile and well-documented projects. This study identified practices from projects representing a wider range of conditions and techniques. Information on existing practices and advancements in concrete pavement construction and rehabilitation was gathered through literature reviews and a survey of state transportation agencies, including that of the District of Columbia and the Illinois Tollway. Furthermore, sixteen case examples were reported to illustrate successful projects conducted under a variety of scenarios.

In conducting this investigation, detailed surveys on 85 pavement projects in 7 States were made. These pavements were generally under 15 years old, and reinforced and continuously reinforced pavements. The results of this investigation are contained in the report as prepared by PCA. Some of the aspects of Portland Cement Concrete pavements covered include: 1) Categories and characteristics of PCC pavements; 2) Pavement problems, their causes and required maintenance; 3) A pavement performance and condition survey; 4) A charted summary, design, and construction practices of the states (available separately on request); 5) Construction and maintenance costs, and 6) Design and construction recommendations.
