Synopsis The Economics of Herbert Spencer (Classic Reprint) by : W. C. Owen

Excerpt from The Economics of Herbert Spencer Henry George's book reached the English Radicals, there has been a growing disposition to impose a tax of twenty shillings in the pound on obviously unearned incomes: that is, to dump four hundred and fifty millions a year down on the Exchequer counter, and then retire with three cheers for the restoration of the land to the people. Synopsis The Economic Synthesis by : Achille Loria

Excerpt from The Economic Synthesis: A Study of the Laws of Income Similarly, sociology begins with the study of static phenomena -a study not at first very profound. J ohn Stuart Mill pointed out that Comte's writings on social statics were poor and incoherent in comparison with the work of the same author in the dynamic and evolutionary fields.1 Herbert Spencer frankly admitted how imperfect and erroneous were his first statical generalisations, and he found 'it necessary to correct them in essential particulars as a result of reiterated study of the dynamic laws of society and of nature.2 But not until quite recently has there been manifest a tendency to pass from the dynamic researches, which up till now have occupied almost the whole field of sociology, to positive and more elevated synthetic studies.3 Hence in sociology also a primi tive and imperfect statical stage gives place to a period of dynamical study, and upon the foundation of this latter there arises, in a yet later stage of development, a scientific and profound synthesis. Synopsis The Economics of Anarchy by : Dyer Daniel Lum

Excerpt from The Economics of Anarchy: A Study of the Industrial Type All sociologists claim that progress has consisted in departure from com pulsory to voluntary cc-operation; from the reign of militant measures to what is termed the industrial type, Wherein self-reliance and free cc-operation directs; from the inequalities of privileged and restricted classes to the equality of equal freedom to natural opportunities; in short, to use the concise statement of Herbert Spencer, from a regime of status to a regime of contract. In the social order militancy and industrialism, therefore, represent past and future types; the first wherein war is the normal direction of human activity; the other where peace must prevail for healthful development. Following this guiding principle let us endeavor to group the salient points of progress from militant rule to industrial requirements in order to see more clearly not only in what direction we are tending, but also what methods are not conducive to that end. Starting with the fact that social evolution is chiefly characterized by a transition from warlike to peaceful pursuits, that from generation to genera tion activity has been turning from conquest over fellowmen to conquest over nature for men, we see at once that methods characterizing an outgrown phase of life are inappropriate to the end toward which progress has been made. Synopsis Economic Foundations of Society (Classic Reprint) by : Achille Loria

Excerpt from Economic Foundations of Society Modern sociologists are still groping about for a point of departure from which to explain the complex of social phenomena. It was easier for the philosophers of the last century, for all were then agreed that Society was to be "rightly constituted by victorious Analysis." But Philosophism has had its day, and Positivism now reigns in the domain of social science. We no longer hope to reconstitute society upon a fabulous state of nature; we are seeking now to discover the natural laws of social evolution. On the one side there are the biological sociologists who would determine the principles of the new science by analogies drawn from the animal world. But it is not enough merely to substitute super-organic for organic evolution, and proceed at once to confer biological definitions upon sociological facts. True, the terminology of the science is thereby enriched and its methods somewhat improved; but the principles peculiar to social growth still remain to be discovered. There is also a group of psychological sociologists who seek the motives of collective life in the individual instincts of the man. But personal proclivities are so largely the result of historical inheritance and the social environment, that there is constant danger in pursuing this method of confusing cause with consequence, and thus becoming involved in a vicious circle. It is difficult, besides, without some guiding principle, to hit upon instincts that are especially characteristic of the human species, and at the same time sufficiently original and universal to apply to all social phenomena.
