His ‘Ecclesiastical History’ in nine books is broadly arranged along the reigns of Roman Emperors, from the conversion of Constantine I and the Council of Nicea (312-325) to the accession of Valentinian III (425). Sozomen’s text is distinguished for its classical literary style, its favouring of monasticism and its greater use of western European sources.
