Synopsis The Early Story of the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Victoria (Classic Reprint) by : W. L. Blamires
Excerpt from The Early Story of the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Victoria God. The volume is, therefore, a Jubilee Memorial, and an offering to the Methodist public. Like the Banyan tree, whose branches spread out, then incline towards, and eventually reach, the earth, where they strike root until vigorous offshoots become both a progeny and support to the parent stock, so there are innate forces in Methodism which cause it to spread out in all directions, till a cluster of Churches is formed, in time becoming selfsupporting, but yet maintaining a vital and glad connection with the parent Church. The truth of this has been verified and illustrated in this land. The plain narrative of this growth is given in this volume. The authors are not historians, but more like annalists They have not exhaustively studied the facts, interrogated the spirit, and deduced the important lessons, which Methodism in this land presents to the historian. They have compiled and put into a succinct form the facts and annals of the early Methodist story. Their plan has been, of set purpose, to be full when writing about the first and pioneer work of the Church, but to be brief and summary when relating its more recent achievements. They could not enlarge upon the recent, as they felt at liberty to do upon the earlier story. The work was too delicate, and the perspective too near for them to attempt it. They preferred sketching the more distant landscape, and have dealt with the nearer foreground in a few outlines. This may be disappointing to some, but worthy deeds and lives in recent years will be dealt with in due time, when we are considerably older, but by other hands than the writers of this volume. Synopsis A Short History of Wesleyan Methodist Foreign Missions (Classic Reprint) by : John Telford
Excerpt from A Short History of Wesleyan Methodist Foreign Missions This History appears at a moment when the mission ary spirit of Methodism has found memorable expression in the removal of a burdensome debt and a large addition to the annual income of the Society. The facts given in this volume abundantly justify the confidence of our Church, and show that the sacrifices it has made during the last century and a quarter for the spread of the gospel are bearing fruit for which we can never cease to be grateful to God. Synopsis The History of the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society, Vol. 1 of 5 (Classic Reprint) by : George G. Findlay
Excerpt from The History of the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society, Vol. 1 of 5 The Missionary Society found itself confronted, not only with the loss of the most competent historian in the Church, but also with the fact that the very completeness of Dr. Findlay's work had become an obstacle in the way of its accomplishment. To continue the preparation of the History on the same scale entailed an indefinite prolongation of the time required before its publication could be expected, while the completed work would be of such dimensions as would make it awkward to handle and inaccessible to many. It was there fore decided to modify Dr. Findlay's original scheme to a slight extent, and to issue the work in five volumes. The task of preparing Dr. F indlay's work for the press, and of completing the History, was committed to the writer of this Preface. Synopsis History of the Wesleyan Academy by : David Sherman
Excerpt from History of the Wesleyan Academy: At Wilbraham, Mass;; 1817-1890 To those interested in the work of education, this volume will prove valuable, as containing the record of early struggles in building a literary institution. The founding was a work of faith. The preachers of the New England Conference made a great venture. Like the patriarch, they marched into a strange land they were to possess only after many days of toil and trial. The history shows the ultimate realization of their highest expectations. As the first successful experiment of the Methodists in American education, the enterprise has an interest for all the disciples of Wesley. At Wilbraham, after many defeats and hindrances, the leaders made a stand and turned the tide of battle in favor of higher education by the church. From the day Fisk planted his foot on the soil, the work prospered and progressed. A new spirit entered the denomination, and Christian schools began to spring up, under Methodist auspices, in every part of the land. Let none of the later schools forget how much they owe to this earliest and honored institution. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
