Synopsis The Divine Paraclete by : Thomas Scott Preston

Excerpt from The Divine Paraclete: A Short Series of Sermons Upon the Person and Office of the Holy Ghost Who draws true souls to Himself more and more. The world of faith is His kingdom, where the realities of divine revelation are felt and appreciated. By Him we are taken out of the world of sense, and taught to live the true life which is in God. To Him we owe all our supernatural being, from its first beginning to its glorious end. Deep should be our gratitude and ardent our devotion to this blessed Spirit, by whose breath we are new born, and by whose strength our souls are made meet for the inheritance of light. The whole economy of grace is found in this devo tion, and in the knowledge which flows from it. The church, with all its gifts, is the sphere of the sanctifying energy of the Holy Ghost and no one can properly believe in the person and office of the divine Paraclete who does not receive the Catholic Church as the body of Christ, and enter by the open door. Synopsis The Divine Opportunity by : Fairbank B. Stockdale

Excerpt from The Divine Opportunity: Sermons Many are the elements of preaching. If Christian public sentiment were to unite on its one essential characteristic, I suppose it would be imperatively required that the preacher should have a message. Whatever a man may have attained, unless he bear the commission to speak in behalf of God, he cannot be a preacher in the true sense of the word. The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream; and he that hath my word, let him speak my word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat? Saith the Lord. The author of this volume of sermons is a seer, a herald, a messenger. To those who have heard him preach this will not be new information. If others may be inclined to attribute the statement to the enthusiasm of friendship, let them read the volume. Synopsis Bread and Salt From the Word of God by : Theodor Zahn

Excerpt from Bread and Salt From the Word of God: In Sixteen Sermons The reach of English readers, is rather that they may see for themselves how exact and profound learning is compatible with a spirit of childlike reverence and humility, a directness of speech in rebuke of prevalent ungodliness, an ardour of devotion to Christ as the One Master, and to the leading of the Holy Spirit, which are thoroughly in accord with the teaching of the Apostles, and of the Primitive Church. Dr. Zahn is a loyal Lutheran, and we do not agree with all that he has to say. But we thank God that, notwithstanding the divisions. Synopsis The Divine Life in Man by : Frederick A. Noble

Excerpt from The Divine Life in Man: And Other Sermons Often as any soul comes under the regenerating power of the gospel and is born into the kingdom. This is what is brought out with an almost start ling distinctness in the group of passages standing at the head of this discourse. Man, like God, is per sonal and spiritual. He has the source of his being in God. He has come into life in virtue of the breath Of God in his soul. He has a certain intel lectual and moral likeness to God; and by cultivation and discipline this likeness may be advanced till his thought and will reflect, in some measure, the thought and will of God, and all his movements and desires are in the direction of God. He may yield his whole nature - all his powers and faculties - up to the guid ance of God, and the current of an exalted fellow ship may flow back and forth between his heart and the heart Of God. Having fallen out of this fellow ship, and lost this divine life, through sin, he may yet find it again through faith in the Son of God, who came into the world for the express purpose of renewing men dead in trespasses and sins, and re storing the marred image in which they were made. He may have inward witness that God is his Father, and that he is God's child. He may know and eh joy God. These are general statements covering the case. The further development of the subject will be pro moted best by asking two or three questions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Synopsis The Ten Blessings by : W. F. Pendleton

Excerpt from The Ten Blessings: A Series of Twelve Sermons Blessed are the poor in spirit; for their's is the king dom of heaven. (matthew 5: The fifth chapter of Matthew opens with these words: And seeing the multitudes, He went up into a mountain; and when he was set, His disciples came unto Him; and He opened His mouth, and taught them, saying. Then follow the blessings, or Beatitudes, being the first words which the Lord uttered in what is known as the Sermon on the Mount; and the first of this Sermon, as well as the first of the Beatitudes, is, Blessed are the poor in spirit; for their's is the king dom of heaven. The kingdom of heaven is composed of those who are poor in spirit, and they are blessed in the possession of it; of them is the kingdom of heaven. But let us review briefly the opening words of the chapter before proceeding to a consideration of the text.
