Synopsis The Storyteller by : Tom Edwards

This is a series of short stories, most of which have a sting in the tail. Some are based on the true experiences of the author; some have been embellished, and some are purely fictional. The first story, The Entomologist, is true, and the conversation, which is full of malapropisms, actually occurred. Frappin’ the Wurzel, on the other hand, is entirely a figment of the author’s imagination. It depicts George, a bucolic Arcadian in a small English pub, who in an effort to maintain his reputation as the village prankster exploits the very obvious charms of an American tourist—an activity that would probably get him thrown in goal in a more enlightened society. Spider Loves Me and a Near Gaff introduces pathos into the mix, and most of the other stories have an unexpected ending that may intrigue or amuse the reader. The title of this book was inadvertently suggested to me by a charming lady while I was giving a talk to a library group. I had been narrating various yarns of events that had occurred during my lifetime and my audience appeared to enjoy them. During the tea break, the lady approached me remarking, “You are a storyteller!” I placed the wrong connotation on her comment and protested that they were all true. She hurriedly corrected my misunderstanding saying that she enjoyed my tales and that I should set them down in a book; this I have done. Many of the stories have an element of truth, painfully so. However, some are figments of my imagination, and some have been enhanced to give them humor or pathos. Most have a twist in the tale that may surprise or amuse the reader. I do hope you enjoy them.

Synopsis The Holy Longing by : Ronald Rolheiser

Channeling the deep, mysterious desires of our hearts, Ronald Rolheiser leads readers from restlessness to peace, showing a contemporary path to authentic and healthy spiritual life—now featuring a new reader’s guide! In The Holy Longing, Ronald Rolheiser probes the question “What is spirituality?”, cutting through the misunderstanding and confusion that can often surround this subject with his trademark clarity. Using examples and stories relevant for today, and with great sensitivity to modern challenges to religious faith, he explains the essentials of spiritual life, including the importance of community worship, the imperatives surrounding social action, and the centrality of the Incarnation, to outline a Christian spirituality that reflects the yearning and search for meaning at the core of the human experience. Essential reading for anyone seeking to understand what Christian spirituality means and how to apply it to their own lives, The Holy Longing translates the universal struggle for love and integration of spirit into a language accessible to all, explaining God and the Church for a world that more often than not doubts the credibility of both.

Synopsis Stayin’ Alive by : Jefferson Cowie

Winner of the 2011 Merle Curti award, an epic account that recasts the 1970s as the key turning point in modern U.S. history, from the renowned historian A wide-ranging cultural and political history that will forever redefine a misunderstood decade, Stayin’ Alive is prizewinning historian Jefferson Cowie’s remarkable account of how working-class America hit the rocks in the political and economic upheavals of the 1970s. In this edgy and incisive book—part political intrigue, part labor history, with large doses of American music, film and television lore—Cowie, with “an ear for the power and poetry of vernacular speech” (Cleveland Plain Dealer), reveals America’s fascinating path from rising incomes and optimism of the New Deal to the widening economic inequalities and dampened expectations of the present.

Synopsis I Am Not Your Victim by : Bethel Sipe

Detailing the domestic violence suffered by the first author during her 16 year marriage, this moving volume details the background and events leading up to and immediately following Beth Sipe's tragic act of desperation: ending the life of the perpetrator. Encouraged to publish her story by her therapist and co-author, Evelyn Hall, Sipe relates how her case was mishandled by the police, the military, a mental health professional and the welfare system, illustrating how women like herself are further victimized and neglected by the very systems that are expected to provide assistance. Her story is followed by seven commentaries by experts in the field. They discuss the causes and process of spousal abuse, reasons why battered women stay, and the dynamic consequences of domestic violence.

Synopsis All Fun and Games Until Somebody Loses an Eye by : Christopher Brookmyre

This prize-winning comic thriller takes readers “from high-octane gun antics to kitchen mopping in East Kilbride . . . [in] one beast of a story” (The Guardian, UK). International bestselling author Christopher Brookmyre has been lauded for his dark sense of humor and brilliant suspense plotting. Now his Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize–winning novel follows “his most ambitious heroine yet”: a forty-six-year-old house-proud grandmother (The Guardian, UK). As a teenager, Jane Bell had dreamt of playing in the casinos of Monte Carlo, surrounded by the likes of James Bond. But now her dreams are as dry as the dust her Dyson sucks up from her hall carpet. Her son Ross, a researcher for a Swiss arms manufacturer, is the one with the exciting life. But lately it’s gotten a bit too exciting. Ross needs to disappear before some shady characters force him to divulge the secrets of his research. And they’re not the only ones desperate to locate him. Ross’s firm has hired a team of security experts, and, headed by the enigmatic Bett, they have little in common apart from total professionalism and a thorough disregard for the law. Bett believes the key to Ross’s whereabouts is his mother, and in one respect, he is right. But even he is taken aback by her dogged determination to secure her son’s safety. The teenage dreams of fast cars, high-tech firepower, and extreme action had always promised to be fun and games, but in real life, it’s likely someone is going to lose an eye . . . “Funny, electric and captivating.” —Times (UK)
