Synopsis Statesmen, Strategists, and Diplomats by : Patrice Dutil

Foreign policy is a tricky business. Typically, its challenges and proposed solutions are perceived as mismatched unless a leader can amass enough support for an idea to create a consensus. Because the prime ministers are typically the ones supporting a compromise, Canadian foreign policy can be analyzed through the actions of these leaders. Statesmen, Strategists, and Diplomats explores how prime ministers – from Sir John A. MacDonald to Justin Trudeau – have shaped foreign policy. This innovative focus is destined to trigger a new appreciation for the formidable personal attention and acuity involved in a successful approach to external affairs.

Synopsis Sovereignty and Command in Canada–US Continental Air Defence, 1940–57 by : Richard Goette

The 1940 Ogdensburg Agreement entrenched a formal defence relationship between Canada and the United States. But was Canadian sovereignty upheld? Drawing on untapped archival material, Sovereignty and Command in Canada–US Continental Air Defence, 1940–57 documents the close and sometimes fractious relationship between the two countries. Richard Goette challenges prevailing perceptions that Canada’s defence relationship with the United States eroded Canadian sovereignty. He argues instead that a functional military transition from an air defence system based on cooperation to one based on integrated and centralized command and control under NORAD allowed Canada to retain command of its forces and thus protect Canadian sovereignty. Goette combines historical narrative with conceptual analysis of sovereignty, command and control systems, military professionalism, and civil-military relations. In the process, he provides essential insights into the Royal Canadian Air Force’s paradigm shift away from its Royal Air Force roots toward closer ties with the United States Air Force and the role of the nation’s armed forces in safeguarding its sovereignty.

Synopsis Security Communities by : Emanuel Adler

This book argues that community can exist at the international level, and that security politics is profoundly shaped by it, with states dwelling within an international community having the capacity to develop a pacific disposition. By investigating the relationship between international community and the possibility for peaceful change, this book revisits the concept first pioneered by Karl Deutsch: 'security communities'. Leading scholars examine security communities in various historical and regional contexts: in places where they exist, where they are emerging, and where they are hardly detectable. Building on constructivist theory, the volume is an important contribution to international relations theory and security studies, attempting to understand the conjunction of transnational forces, state power and international organizations that can produce a security community.

Synopsis Defence Planning and Uncertainty by : Stephan Frühling

How can countries decide what kind of military forces they need, if threats are uncertain and history is full of strategic surprises? This is a question that is more pertinent than ever, as countries across the Asia-Pacific are faced with the military and economic rise of China. Uncertainty is inherent in defence planning, but different types of uncertainty mean that countries need to approach decisions about military force structure in different ways. This book examines four different basic frameworks for defence planning, and demonstrates how states can make decisions coherently about the structure and posture of their defence forces despite strategic uncertainty. It draws on case studies from the United States, Australian and New Zealand, each of which developed key concepts for their particular circumstances and risk perception in Asia. Success as well as failure in developing coherent defence planning frameworks holds lessons for the United States and other countries as they consider how best to structure their military forces for the uncertain challenges of the future.

Synopsis The Military and United States Indian Policy 1865-1903 by : Robert Wooster

"A model of analytical history. In . . . spare, cogent prose, Wooster delineates military strategy against the western tribes, places the political influence of the Gilded Age military establishment in solid perspective, gives an able survey of the institutional structure of the postwar army, briefly describes key Indian campaigns, and presents pithy characterizations of leading western military personalities. . . . Wooster's book places events in a national, and in military terms international, context. In so doing he has made a major contribution to frontier and military scholarship".-Paul Andrew Hutton, American Historical Review. "A superior and important book. . . . [Wooster] succinctly identifies and illumines significant truths about the military establishment and its role in the final stages of confrontation and conflict along the western Indian frontier".-Robert M. Utley, Journal of American History. "A provocative example of the new historiography. . . . Students of the Indian wars have frequently suffered from a form of myopia. . . until now, no one has undertaken so comprehensive or critical a look at the army's role in formulating and implementing Indian policy".-Bruce Dinges, New Mexico Historical Review. Robert Wooster, an associate professor of history at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, is the author of Nelson A. Miles and the Twilight of the Frontier Army (Nebraska 1993).

Synopsis A Military History of Canada by : Desmond Morton

Updated to 2007, including Canada’s war on terrorism. Is Canada really “a peaceable kingdom” with “an unmilitary people”? Nonsense, says Desmond Morton. This is a country that has been shaped, divided, and transformed by war — there is no greater influence in Canadian history, recent or remote. From the shrewd tactics of Canada’s First Nations to our troubled involvement in Somalia, from the Plains of Abraham to the deserts of Afghanistan, Morton examines our centuries-old relationship to war and its consequences. This updated edition also includes a new chapter on Canada’s place in the war on terrorism. A Military History of Canada is an engaging and informative chronicle of Canada at war, from one of the country’s finest historians.
