Synopsis The Cross and the Dragon Or the Fortunes of Christianity in China by : John Kesson

Excerpt from The Cross and the Dragon or the Fortunes of Christianity in China: With Notices of the Christian Missions and Missionaries, and Some Account of the Chinese Secret Societies The subject treated In the following pages resolves itself into five distinct heads. Under the first, notice is taken of the legends of the introduction of Christianity into China by the Apostle Thomas and his disciples. Under the second head, some space is devoted to the history of the Nestorian Christians in China, in the seventh century, with their leader, Olo-puen, the first apostle. The third head comprises the missions of the Dominicans and Franciscans in the fourteenth century; the chief actor being John of Monte Corvin, the second Chinese Apostle. This mission was speedily extinguished, and no farther attempts were made to introduce a knowledge of Christianity into China until the sixteenth century, when the Jesuit mission was founded by the celebrated Matteo Ricci. Synopsis The Dragon and the Cross by : Mdiv Ho Dmin

Advance acclaim "Louis's work contributes greatly for those who wish to understand more about the great Nation of China. Focusing both upon the past, and looking to the future, this academic and personal reflection enables an agenda to form which commands response." The Most Rev. Dr. Sean E. Larkin, Archbishop, Province II (Europe & Canada), UAC W H Auden reminded us that "Man is history-making creature who can neither repeat his past nor leave it behind." In this stimulating book, Louis Ho discusses the need for Christians to come face to face with the legacy and ongoing influence of the Christian Church in China, a connection as long-standing as it is complex. Drawing on his own experience, and with a discussion of mission activities early and modern, this broad-ranging book offers a helpful survey of the many important issues involved. Dr. Earle Sharam, Dean, St. Stephen's Theological College, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. A necessary look at how the West failed in attempting to bring the Christian faith to China. Much food for thought and leads me to want to know more. How do we meld the Christian faith into other cultures while maintaining our integrity? Father Hal Dallmann, Rector of the Parish Community of St. Barnabas, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada About the Author A researcher on the Church in China, Louis Ho holds a Doctor of Ministry and Master of Theological Studies from St. Stephen's College at the University of Alberta, Master of Divinity from Newman Theological College, and Master of Education and Master if Library Science from the University of British Columbia. Synopsis Christianity in China by : Daniel H. Bays

This pathbreaking volume will force a reassessment of many common assumptions about the relationship between Christianity and modern China. The overall thrust of the twenty essays is that despite the conflicts and tension that often have characterized relations between Christianity and China, in fact Christianity has been, for the past two centuries or more, putting down roots within Chinese society, and it is still in the process of doing so. Thus Christianity is here interpreted not just as a Western religion that imposed itself on China, but one that was becoming a Chinese religion, as Buddhism did centuries ago. Eschewing the usual focus on foreign missionaries, as is customary, this research effort is China-centered, drawing on Chinese sources, including government and organizational documents, private papers, and interviews. The essays are organized into four major sections: Christianity’s role in Qing society, including local conflicts (6 essays); ethnicity (3 essays); women (5 essays); and indigenization of the Christian effort (6 essays). The editor has provided sectional introductions to highlight the major themes in each section, as well as a general Introduction.
