Synopsis The Coyote's Chance by : Holley Trent
Becoming the new alpha of Maria’s chaotic pack is coyote shifter Blue Shapely’s long-awaited chance to be his own man. Unfortunately, the pack’s hapless patron can’t help but thwart him at every turn. After being magically attached to the Coyote group for more than a century, Willa Matheson has a soft spot for them—even the dangerous ones threatening to expose them to humans. She may have hired Blue to rein in the pack, but the two constantly disagree on strategy. She’s afraid to ruffle feathers, but take-charge Blue will do whatever it takes to get his Coyotes in line. And to complicate things even more: all signs point to the anxious demigoddess being his mate. Developing a tenderness for Willa will be an obstacle to Blue’s determination to be as ruthless as he needs to be, but if the duo can’t find a way to retract their claws, and soon, it may be too late to protect the pack’s secret—and their own hearts.

Synopsis Chance in the World by : Carl Hoefer
Probability has fascinated philosophers, scientists, and mathematicians for hundreds of years. Although the mathematics of probability is, for most applications, clear and uncontroversial, the interpretation of probability statements continues to be fraught with controversy and confusion. What does it mean to say that the probability of some event X occurring is 31%? In the 20th century a consensus emerged that there are at least two legitimate kinds of probability, and correspondingly at least two kinds of possible answers to this question of meaning. Subjective probability, also called 'credence' or 'degree of belief' is a numerical measure of the confidence of some person or some ideal rational agent. Objective probability, or chance, is a fact about how things are in the world. It is this second type of probability with which Carl Hoefer is concerned in this volume, specifically how we can understand the meaning of statements about objective probability. He aims to settle the question of what objective chances are, once and for all, with an account that can meet the demands of philosophers and scientists alike. For Hoefer, chances are constituted by patterns that can be discerned in the events that happen in our world. These patterns are ideally appropriate guides to what credences limited rational agents, such as ourselves, should have in situations of imperfect knowledge. By showing this, Hoefer bridges the gap between subjective probability and chance. In a field where few scholars have given adequate treatment to interpreting statements of chance, Hoefer develops a philosophically rich theory which draws on the disciplines of metaphysics, ontology, and philosophy of science.

Synopsis The Coyote's Comfort by : Holley Trent
While most of Maria, New Mexico is getting into the holiday spirit, coyote shifter Diana Shapely has more pressing concerns. For one thing, the due date of her twin niece and nephew is rapidly approaching and she needs to find them the absolute perfect welcome-to-the-world gifts. For another, the girlfriend she ghosted a year ago just showed up out of the blue. Lanie Chappell is a tough cookie who knows how to take “no” for an answer, but she also knows there’s something off about Diana’s rambling rationale for dumping her. Diana claimed she merely wanted to protect human Lanie from the dangerous world of shapeshifters, but Lanie had never asked to be coddled. She didn’t spend more than a decade in the Army hiding from challenges. Furthermore, if there’s anyone who needs her back watched, it’s Diana. The truth is that Diana was terrified that Lanie would realize Diana didn’t stack up. After being told all her life that she’d never make anything of herself, Diana decided that she’d rather cut her losses than be the one who gets left. Steady Lanie is the soothing counterbalance to Diana’s wilder spirit and the champion she’s always wanted. But if Diana can’t shake off the deep-seated insults of the past, she’ll never be able to claim the mate she deserves. This story is a stand-alone romance set in the Masters of Maria series. It can be read on its own.

Synopsis I Am Coyote by : Geri Vistein
Coyote is three years old when she leaves her family in Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario and embarks on a 500-mile odyssey eastward in search of a territory of her own and a mate to share it with. Journeying by night through the dead of winter, she endures extreme cold, hunger, and a harrowing crossing of the St. Lawrence River in Montreal before her cries of loneliness are finally answered in the wilds of Maine. The mate she finds must gnaw off a paw to escape a trap. The first coyotes in the northern U.S., they raise pups (losing several), experience summer plenty, winter hardship, playfulness, and unmistakable love and grief. Blending science and imagination with magical results, this story tells how coyotes may have populated a land desperately in need of a keystone predator, and no one who reads it will doubt the value of their ecological role. Told through the eyes of a coyote, this is a riveting story with mythic dimensions. A work of creative nonfiction that adheres to the highest standards of wildlife biology. With deep insights into wild canine behavior, penetrates the veil of “otherness” that separates us from the animals with whom we share the planet. An appendix explores the history and current status of coyotes in North America. Native Americans considered them tricksters, messengers, and companions. Given the disappearance of wolves, they are even more critical to ecosystem health today. The author explains how, without coyotes, prey species are weakened by disease and parasites. Geri Vistein speaks extensively about coyote-human interactions to a variety of audiences. She is a nationally recognized expert on the topic and maintains the website CoyoteLivesInMaine.com. A QR code in the book takes readers to a hauntingly beautiful recording of coyote song.
