Synopsis The Concepts and Logic of Classical Thermodynamics as a Theory of Heat Engines by : Clifford A. Truesdell

Mon but n'a jamais be de m'occuper des ces matieres comme physicien, mais seulement comme /ogicien ... F. REECH, 1856 I do not think it possible to write the history of a science until that science itself shall have been understood, thanks to a clear, explicit, and decent logical structure. The exuberance of dim, involute, and undisciplined his torical essays upon classical thermodynamics reflects the confusion of the theory itself. Thermodynamics, despite its long history, has never had the benefit of a magisterial synthesis like that which EULER gave to hydro dynamics in 1757 or that which MAXWELL gave to electromagnetism in 1873; the expositions in the works of discovery in thermodynamics stand a pole apart from the pellucid directness of the notes in which CAUCHY presented his creation and development of the theory of elasticity from 1822 to 1845. Thermodynamics was born in obscurity and disorder, not to say confusion, and there the common presentations of it have remained. With this tractate I aim to provide a simple logical structure for the classical thermodynamics of homogeneous fluid bodies. Like any logical structure, it is only one of many possible ones. I think it is as simple and pretty as can be.

Synopsis Thermodynamics by : G. Astarita

If a Writer would know how to behave himself with relation to Posterity; let him consider in old Books, what he finds, that he is glad to know; and what Omissions he most laments. Jonathan Swift This book emerges from a long story of teaching. I taught chemical engineering thermodynamics for about ten years at the University of Naples in the 1960s, and I still remember the awkwardness that I felt about any textbook I chose to consider-all of them seemed to be vague at best, and the standard of logical rigor seemed immensely inferior to what I could find in books on such other of the students in my first class subjects as calculus and fluid mechanics. One (who is now Prof. F. Gioia of the University of Naples) once asked me a question which I have used here as Example 4. 2-more than 20 years have gone by, and I am still waiting for a more intelligent question from one of my students. At the time, that question compelled me to answer in a way I didn't like, namely "I'll think about it, and I hope I'll have the answer by the next time we meet. " I didn't have it that soon, though I did manage to have it before the end of the course.

Synopsis Rational Thermodynamics by : C. Truesdell

In the first edition of this book I tried to survey in brief compass the main ideas, methods, and discoveries of rational thermodynamics as it then stood, only five years after Messrs. COLEMAN & NOLL, while in Baltimore, had written the fundamental memoir that provided for the new science the one root theretofore wanting. A survey in the same style today would require an almost wholly new book, three or four times as long. As it was in 1968, again in 1983 a consecutive treatise restricted to the foundations would be premature, for at this moment they are under earnest discussion, probing analysis, and powerful attack by several students and from several directions. Because, although in the first edition I expressed some opinions I no longer hold and made some statements I should now recast or even re tract, it seems even yet to offer a simple introduction to some aspects of the field that remain current, I have chosen to reprint it unaltered except for emendation of slips and bettering of the English here and there.

Synopsis Computing and Simulation for Engineers by : Ziya Uddin

This book presents the reader with comprehensive insight into various kinds of mathematical modeling and numerical computation for problems arising in several branches of engineering, such as mechanical engineering, computer science engineering, electrical engineering, electronics and communication engineering, and civil engineering. The book: • Discusses topics related to clean and green energy production and storage • Bridges the gap between core theory and costly industrial experiments • Covers advanced biomechanics and nanodrug delivery topics • Explores diversified applications of mathematical techniques to solve practical engineering problems The text in this book emphasizes mathematical treatment of soft computing, image and signal processing, fluid flows in various geometries, biomechanics, biological modeling, a mathematical description of the solar cell, analytical and numerical treatment of problems in fracture mechanics, and antenna design modeling. It also discusses the numerical computations of biomechanics problems and problems arising in cryptography. The text further covers optimization techniques that are useful for real-world problems. This material is primarily written for graduate students and academic researchers in a number of engineering fields, including electrical, electronics and communication, industrial, manufacturing, mechanical, computer science, and mathematics.
