Piazza explores the notions of innovation and New respectively in the Social Sciences and in the Humanities, tracing the differences from the conceptual and temporal perspective in relation to the most recent debates on creativity and postmodernism. The book investigates the field of theatre and dance, focusing on the essential aspects that link the New with the contemporary condition and its discourse. Combining theory and practice, this book calls for an art production able to slip out of the framework of innovation and builds the ground to rethink the New and its political value in the arts.

We live in a world that is increasingly difficult to understand. It is not just changing: it is metamorphosing. Change implies that some things change but other things remain the same capitalism changes, but some aspects of capitalism remain as they always were. Metamorphosis implies a much more radical transformation in which the old certainties of modern society are falling away and something quite new is emerging. To grasp this metamorphosis of the world it is necessary to explore the new beginnings, to focus on what is emerging from the old and seek to grasp future structures and norms in the turmoil of the present. Take climate change: much of the debate about climate change has focused on whether or not it is really happening, and if it is, what we can do to stop or contain it. But this emphasis on solutions blinds us to the fact that climate change is an agent of metamorphosis. It has already altered our way of being in the world the way we live in the world, think about the world and seek to act upon the world through our actions and politics. Rising sea levels are creating new landscapes of inequality drawing new world maps whose key lines are not traditional boundaries between nation-states but elevations above sea level. It is creating an entirely different way of conceptualizing the world and our chances of survival within it. The theory of metamorphosis goes beyond theory of world risk society: it is not about the negative side effects of goods but the positive side effects of bads. They produce normative horizons of common goods and propel us beyond the national frame towards a cosmopolitan outlook.

First published in 1983, François Perroux’s A New Concept of Development analyses the major paradox of our era: the desire for progress and the mistrust of its consequences. Ramón Gómez de la Serna (1888-1963) was one of Spain’s most gifted avant-gardists. Oftentimes remembered as the inventor of the greguería—a type of witty and humorous epigram that recasts the commonplace and absurdities of everyday reality—he was a prolific writer and published dozens of novels, essays, short stories, articles, editorials, and biographies throughout his life. Two of his major works—the autobiography Morbidities (1908), and the manifesto “The Concept of the New Literature” (1909)—belong to his earliest period of experimentation. These two early works are of singular importance not only in understanding his development as an avant-gardist, but also in analyzing Spanish literature within the broader framework of European avant-garde culture. With prescient clarity, they highlight many of the aesthetic notions that would revolutionize experimental literature throughout the modernist period. This book offers the first complete English translation of Morbidities and “The Concept of the New Literature,” and it introduces anglophone readers to some of Gómez de la Serna’s most passionate ideas about modernity and “new literature.”
