The Collected Works of Witness Lee, 1985, volume 4, contains messages and fellowship given by Brother Witness Lee on October 4 through December 8, 1985. At the beginning of October Brother Lee traveled to Taipei, Taiwan, and ministered there until the first week of December. During this period he visited Singapore and Manila, Philippines, for about one week. The contents of this volume are divided into six sections, as follows: 1. Ten messages given in Taipei, Taiwan, on October 4 through November 6. These messages were previously published in Chinese in a book entitled The Supply of the Word and the Increase of the Church. They were translated into English and are included in this volume under the same title. 2. Five messages given in Taipei, Taiwan, on October 7 through 11. These messages were previously published in Chinese and English in a book entitled The Full Knowledge of the Word of God. They are included in this volume under the same title. 3. Five messages given in Taipei, Taiwan, on October 7 through 11. These messages were previously published in Chinese and English in a book entitled Everyone Speaking the Word of God. They are included in this volume under the same title. 4. Five messages given in Taipei, Taiwan, on October 7 through 11. These messages were previously published in Chinese and English in a book entitled Meeting to Speak the Word of God. They are included in this volume under the same title. 5. Eight messages given in Taipei, Taiwan, on November 1 through December 9. These messages were previously published in Chinese in a book entitled Practicing the God-ordained Way with One Accord. They were translated into English and are included in this volume under the same title. 6. Seven messages given in Taipei, Taiwan, on October 17 through November 28. These messages were previously published in Chinese and English in a book entitled Key Points on the Home Meetings. They are included in this volume under the same title.

Much of what is preached and taught among Christians today concerns the earthly ministry of the Lord Jesus, that is, the work He did during His life on the earth. However, just as the person of Christ has two aspects, so does His ministry. While He was on earth, He was the man Jesus. Since His ascension into heaven, however, He is the glorified Christ. His earthly ministry lasted for only a limited time, but His heavenly ministry is eternal; it will never end. What is Christ doing now? In this book, Witness Lee answers this question, opening up the second part of Christ’s ministry, the heavenly ministry, the ministry that continues today.

This book presents a vision of Christ and the church. It then goes on the emphasize the need to experience this Christ as the Spirit in our spirit and to practice the church life on the ground of oneness.

The Collected Works of Witness Lee, 1985, volume 1, contains messages given by Brother Witness Lee from January 3 through September 21, 1985. In 1985 Brother Lee spoke fifty-five messages that were published in The Conclusion of the New Testament. These Life-study messages are not included in The Collected Works of Witness Lee. In early January Brother Lee returned to Anaheim, California, from Irving, Texas. He visited Irvine, California, on January 5, and then returned to Anaheim before traveling to Taipei, Taiwan, a few days later. He returned to Anaheim near the beginning of March and remained there until the beginning of April, at which time he went again to Taipei for about two months. At the beginning of June he returned to Anaheim and, except for a brief visit to Berkeley, California, at the end of August, he remained in Anaheim until the end of September. The contents of this volume are divided into five sections, as follows: 1. Five messages given in Anaheim, California, in various meetings with elders and responsible brothers on January 3 through September 21. These messages are included in this volume under the title Principles for Practicing the New Way. 2. A message given in Irvine, California, to Chinese-speaking saints and gospel friends on January 5. This message was translated into English and is included in this volume under the title The Church Life Being the Highest Social Life. 3. Twelve messages given in Taipei, Taiwan, on January 14 through 19. These messages were previously published in Chinese and English in a book entitled Crucial Words of Leading in the Lord's Recovery, Book 4: The Increase and Spread of the Church. They are included in this volume under the same title. 4. Eighteen messages given in Taipei, Taichung, and Kaohsiung, Taiwan, on February 4 through May 9. These messages were previously published in Chinese and English in a book entitled Crucial Words of Leading in the Lord's Recovery, Book 5: Concerning Various Aspects of Church Service. They are included in this volume under the same title. 5. Fourteen messages given in Taipei, Taiwan, on January 10 through April 12. Twelve of the messages were previously published in Chinese and English in a book entitled Crucial Words of Leading in the Lord's Recovery, Book 6: Everyone Functioning for the Increase of the Church. They are included in this volume under the same title. In the course of compiling The Collected Works of Witness Lee, 1985, two new messages were identified in this series and were added to the original twelve.

When God created man, He placed him before two trees: the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and the tree of life. In warning man to avoid the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, God indicated His desire for man to eat of the tree of life, signifying that man should receive God as his life supply. Witness Lee unveils in The Tree of Life that God is not looking for well-behaved Christians; He is looking for those who will experience and enjoy Christ as the reality of the tree of life.

In the Lord’s recovery during the past five hundred years the church’s knowledge of the Lord and His truth has been continually progressing. This monumental and classical work by Brother Witness Lee builds upon and is a further development of all that the Lord has revealed to His church in the past centuries. It is filled with the revelation concerning the processed Triune God, the living Christ, the life-giving Spirit, the experience of life, and the definition and practice of the church. In this set Brother Lee has kept three basic principles that should rule and govern every believer in their interpretation, development, and expounding of the truths contained in the Scriptures. The first principle is that of the Triune God dispensing Himself into His chosen and redeemed people; the second principle is that we should interpret, develop, and expound the truths contained in the Bible with Christ for the church; and the third governing principle is Christ, the Spirit, life, and the church. No other study or exposition of the New Testament conveys the life nourishment or ushers the reader into the divine revelation of God’s holy Word according to His New Testament economy as this one does.

“We must realize that we Christians are a meeting people. A Christian is a meeting person. Without meeting, there is no Christian life and no church life. It is rather difficult for any Christian to grow without attending the meetings. There is no way for any Christian to serve God without meetings, and it is impossible for Christians to express Christ if there are no meetings.
