It is' clearly impossible to give any detailed local descriptions in a book of this scope. But it is hoped that the general account may constitute a framework into which detailed local descriptions may be intelligently fitted, a convenient skeleton to carry the details necessary for the special purposes of the meteorologist, the botanist, the zoologist, and the geographer.
