Synopsis The Guncle by : Steven Rowley

From the author of Lily and the Octopus comes a moving and deeply funny novel about a once-famous sitcom star who is left to care for his niece and nephew after an unexpected family tragedy. Patrick, or Gay Uncle Patrick (GUP for short), has always loved his niece, Maisie, and nephew, Grant. That is, he loves spending time with them … in small doses, with their parents there to handle the tears and tricky questions. So when tragedy strikes and Patrick finds himself suddenly taking on the role of primary guardian, he is, honestly, overwhelmed. Patrick has no idea what to expect, having spent years barely holding on after the loss of his great love, a stalled acting career, and a lifestyle not-so-suited to young children. But when he realises that parenting isn’t solved with treats and jokes, Patrick’s eyes are opened to a new sense of responsibility and the realisation that, sometimes, being vulnerable is the only way to heal from grief. Tender, charming and laugh-out-loud funny, The Guncle is a testament to finding happiness and peace in the most trying of times. ‘Steven Rowley’s The Guncle is a gift. At once funny, charming and heartbreaking, it’s that rare novel that will have you laughing out loud, even through tears. I have yet to meet a person who did not love this book.’ Sally Hepworth, bestselling author of The Good Sister and The Younger Wife ‘A joyous Auntie Mame spritz! A reading pleasure; pour yourself a tall glass and enjoy, preferably poolside. You deserve it!’ Andrew Sean Greer, winner of the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Less

Synopsis The Chronicles of My Unique Life by : Darlene House

The author was raised in the San Fernando Valley of Southern California, when the Valley was a wide-open area of orange groves, homes and estates. The large estates were owned by the movie stars such as Roy Rogers and other stars in their heyday. After marriage, my husband and I desired to raise our family in a country atmosphere with a minuscule population. We sold our first home in the valley in order to move to the tiny town of Acton, in the mountainous countryside sixty miles north of Los Angeles. The time line of book is 1928 to 2011 with many odd happening in our lives and unusual memories and pleasant days in the country. We cleared the land, put down a well, and built our home ourselves and raised a family of four children. Upon completion of the house it was necessary to move the home if we wished to continue living in it. It was a new home and yes we wanted it, but this proved to be frightening experience and a near tragic disaster! This is only one of the many unusual happenings in our life in the country. Unwanted animals are freely given to people who live in the country from friends. In this manner, we acquired a burro that soon gave birth to a strong baby burro (on its first day of birth, kicked our young son and knocked him down), several dogs, a beautiful horse and another burro. Life in the country was always surprising and a pleasant place to raise a family, sometimes difficult but nice! We knew friends in a circle of twenty miles in every direction. Our two sons still live in Acton, our daughters have moved to the beach cities in California.

'Brilliant' OK! 'Engagingly warm' Heat 'Sensational' The Mirror'Ronan Keating demolishes his 'Mr Perfect of Pop image in a new warts-and-all book of his amazing ride to stardom.' The MirrorRonan Keating is a very real idol. In a life-story that received extensive press and ecstatic reviews as 'a classic - honest, funny and gripping', Ronan Keating tells the full story of his incredible journey. He may be only 23 but he has lived an extraordinary life so far, from playing football on a housing estate in North Dublin to headlining Madison Square Garden with Elton John. But Ronan has never forgotten it's his fans that got him there. It's an inspirational story of a boy from modest beginnings who confounded the critics and made his mark with talent, boyish good looks and, above all, an integrity that has helped him move from the teen market to a broader, adult audience. In a surprisingly honest, remarkably frank style he talks openly of his background and his beloved mother, Boyzone's extraordinary catapult to fame, his friends and band-mates and his new solo career and his wife and son. Brimming with anecdote and revelation, this is a brilliantly written book by a true star - Ronan.
