ECDL 2002 was the 6th conference in the series of European Conferences on Research and Advanced Technologies for Digital Libraries. ECDL 2002 continued the tradition already established by the previous conferences in meeting the needs of a large and diverse constituency, which includes researchers, practitioners, educators, policy makers, and users. The focus of ECDL 2002 was on underlying principles, methods, systems, and tools to build and make available e?ective digital libraries to end users. Architecture, metadata, collection building, web archiving, web technologies,- books, OAI applications, preservation, navigation, query languages, audio video retrieval, multimedia-mixed media, user studies and evaluation, humanities, and digital libraries were some of the key issues addressed. An international Program Committee was set up composed of 61 members, with representatives from 25 countries. A total of 145 paper submissions, 15 poster submissions, and 18 proposals for demos were received. Each paper was evaluated by 3 referees and 42 full papers and 6 short papers of high quality were selected for presentation.

Synopsis Is That My Child? by : Robin Pauc
At least one child in five experiences some form of learning difficulty, but: * Learning difficulties as we understand them DO NOT exist * They are not diseases just symptoms * These symptoms never appear alone * They are treatable and avoidable Dr Robin Pauc, an expert in child neurology, approaches learning difficulties, including Dyslexia, ADD, OCD, ADHD, Dyspraxia and Tourette's syndrome of childhood, from a truly ground-breaking perspective. All human babies are born prematurely and develop special new brain cells four months after birth. Every human's developement in the womb and particularly in these early stages of life can, therefore, be affected by devlepement delay, which can blight childhood and marginalize a child at school. Since our brains continue to grow, however, the symptoms can also be treated. Is That My Child? Explains the backround to human developmental delay and contains: * Advice on how to get the best assessment for your child and an explanation of what the examination must include * The effects - good and bad - of certain foods on the brain * Excercises and computer programs that you can use to expand your child's neural function * Case histories of children on whom this plan has worked In the single biggest breakthorough in the history of learning difficulties, Is That My Child? explains the cause of Development Delay Syndromes, uses simple, easy-to-follow tips to show you how to greatly reduce the risk of your child suffering, and gives advice on what can be done to treat those children that do.

Synopsis Food and Human Evolution by : Berman Hudson
Food has played a major role in human evolution. The fact that we stand upright, that we can talk, that we have big brains; even traits such as altruism and a sense of fairness—all of these can be attributed largely to the kinds of food our ancestors ate and how they acquired it. When our hominid ancestors learned to make stone weapons, it enabling them to kill and butcher large animals. Eating and sharing meat led to our big brains and our “Machiavellian intelligence.” We now face a modern food-related crisis. About 100 years ago, people began to abandon traditional diets in favor of refined, pre-packaged, factory-made foods. If you list the top ten crops receiving agricultural subsidies from USDA, no fruit or vegetable makes the list. This book describes how the rise of industrial food production unleashed an epidemic of metabolic disease that now threatens the very future of our species. America is being divided into two distinct populations — an obese majority that is subject to disease and early death, and a minority that remains largely free of these diseases. Diet-induced metabolic disease is beginning to pass directly from mothers to their children. Because of this intergenerational amplification, an evolutionary crisis is looming. This book offers a tantalizing range of information and ideas for readers interested in nutrition, anthropology, prehistoric studies, and human evolution, and food, diet, and human health as viewed from an overtly evolutionary perspective.
