Spanish theologian Martin Perez de Ayala (1504-66) wrote a catechism or Catecismo that was not published until more than three decades after he had passed away. Why was the Catecismo published posthumously? The search for answers to this question involved evaluating the Catecismo against thirteen other catechisms written in sixteenth-century Spain. This assessment generated timeless principles that can be used today by those who wish to have cordial conversations about Islam and biblical Christianity with their Muslim friends.

Christian-Muslim Relations. A Bibliographical History, volume 6 (CMR 6), covering the years 1500-1600, is a continuing volume in a history of relations between followers of the two faiths as it is recorded in their written works. Together with introductory essays, it comprises detailed entries on all the works known from this century. This volume traces the attitudes of Western Europeans to Islam, particularly in light of continuing Ottoman expansion, and early despatches sent from Portuguese colonies around the Indian Ocean. The result of collaboration between numerous leading scholars, CMR 6, along with the other volumes in this series, is intended as a fundamental tool for research in Christian-Muslim relations. In the past century the ecumenical movement has made extraordinary efforts in healing the wounds of division in the body of Christ—the church. However, in their formal preparation for ministry, many clergy learn little or nothing about the achievements, methods, or implications of ecumenism. This failure to adequately educate and inspire successive generations of Christian leaders about the quest for the church’s visible unity risks not only an irretrievable loss of ecumenical memory, but also a return to a time in which ignorance, fear, mistrust, suspicion, stereotypes, caricatures, recrimination, anathematization—even persecution—characterized the relations between divided churches. Drawing on decades of reflection on ecumenical reception and formation, and using the Anglican Church of Canada as a model, this book presents an approach to teaching the practical and theological aspects of ecumenism in a way that is both holistic and pragmatic and offers the potential to raise up a new generation of church leaders who are also agents of reconciliation and Christian unity.

Las contribuciones a este libro se centran en las estrategias y los metodos linguisticos interculturales usados por los misioneros coloniales de la America Latina. Su objetivo principal fue una traduccion eficiente de los conceptos cristianos a textos amerindios y sus contextos indigenas para que sus destinatarios nativos lograran una mejor comprension de la nueva religion y abandonaran la suya. Para esto, los misioneros linguistas aprendieron las lenguas autoctonas y el resultado fue la creacion de obras linguisticas (diccionarios y gramaticas) asi como tambien textos para la instruccion religiosa cristiana (doctrinas, sermones etc.). Asimismo tomaron en cuenta teorias de lexicografia y traduccion, y tambien recurrieron a generos textuales nativos y europeos. Los aportes aqui reunidos constituyen una mirada comparativa a traves de Latinoamerica dentro de un marco amplio de disciplinas (como son la historia, la sociolinguistica, la antropologia etc.), estudiando las lenguas nahuatl, tarasco, maya, quechua, tupi, guarani y chiquitano. Al analizar los diferentes acercamientos a la traduccion, los autores llegan a resultados matizados en cuanto a los metodos misioneros, como eran prestamos y traducciones palabra- por-palabra, pero sobre todo la (re-)creacion de nuevos terminos y expresiones en la lengua ajena, frecuentemente basados en lo que se suponia que eran conceptos semanticos y gramaticales nativos. Aparte de una aparente confusion de los indigenas, en los articulos se observa la integracion del cristianismo en las culturas nativas, en la mayoria de los casos en la forma de una 'nativizacion' de la religion europea.
