TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 336: Road Safety Audits examines the state of the practice of road safety audit (RSA) and road safety audit review applications for U.S. states and Canadian provinces. This synthesis also reviews international RSA practices. RSAs were first introduced in the United Kingdom more than 20 years ago and have been applied in New Zealand and Australia since the 1990s.

The Canadian Guide to In-service Road Safety Reviews is a practical guide for conducting reviews on existing roads, based on the current experience and expertise in Canada and internationally. A companion guide to TAC's Canadian Road Safety Audit Guide, this publication provides guidelines to traffic practitioners on how to upgrade the operational and physical characteristics of existing in-service roads to be more compatible with current traffic conditions and safety knowledge.

Basic road safety manual for transportation engineers. Provides an introduction to the road safety field, and describes the safety analysis process, the relationship between components of the road and safety, and the steps required to complete technical studies (sight distances, spot speed, etc.).

TCRP Report 137: Improving Pedestrian and Motorist Safety Along Light Rail Transit Alignments addresses pedestrian and motorist behaviors contributing to light rail transit (LRT) safety and describes mitigating measures available to improve safety along LRT alignments. The report also includes recommendations to facilitate the compilation of accident data in a coordinated and homogeneous manner across LRT systems. Finally, the report provides a catalog of existing and innovative safety devices, safety treatments, and practices to use along LRT alignments. The results of this research may be useful to transit operators, consultants, and state safety oversight agencies.
