Synopsis The Spotted Wonder by : The Tetrarch

If only they could talk? Now one of them does. And not just any nag. THE TETRARCH was one of the Turf's greatest racehorses. The oddly marked colt is acknowledged as the fastest two-year-old ever to set hoof on an English racecourse. His freakish powers set him apart: he was a phenomenon. Retired undefeated amid sensational circumstances, the charismatic grey proved an unenthusiastic stallion. Yet he fathered Classic winners and became champion sire, establishing dynasties that ensure his influence is felt to this day throughout the bloodstock world. Only an elite few racehorses become public idols and earn themselves a nickname. This is the story of THE SPOTTED WONDER as he might tell it. This autobiography written by a horse that is not as off-putting as it sounds. The horse's-eye view of being weaned, trained and taken to the racecourse works surprisingly well. The Spectator The unorthodox yet faithful retelling of an extraordinary story. The real (and anonymous) author clearly knows his stuff and his scholarship shines through. Racing Post A splendidly written biography. Thoroughbred Winner Horse lovers, sports fans and those with a passion for a good story well told will thoroughly enjoy this most unusual book. Not many racehorses narrate their own autobiographies, but The Spotted Wonder has done not just that. The book grips from the start, the narrator's voice full of charm and interest and the story itself thoroughly absorbing. No mere simplistic Black Beauty, but a serious sporting history very well told and a credit to the mystery author. Irish Field The Tetrarch provides a wonderful tale, written by the subject from beyond the grave, and is warmly recommended. The Weekender It is a story told so effortlessly and with such attention to detail that the reader is hooked and reassured that the business of 'storytelling' is in safe hands. It all makes for a fascinating read. Kingsley Klarion

Synopsis Hidden History of Horse Racing in Kentucky by : Foster Ockerman

A behind-the-scenes history of the Bluegrass State’s iconic sport. Horse racing and the Commonwealth of Kentucky are synonymous. The equine industry in the state dates as far back as the eighteenth century, and some of that history remains untold. The Seventeenth Earl of Derby made the trip from England to Louisville for the famed Kentucky Derby. Many famous African American jockeys grew up in the area but fled to Europe during the Jim Crow era. Gambling on races is a popular pastime, but betting in the early days caused significant changes in the sport. Hidden History of Horse Racing in Kentucky details the rich and the lesser-known history at the tracks in the Bluegrass State.
