Synopsis Ace of the Black Cross by : Ernst Udet
Above the mud and misery of the trenches and the endless slugging matches of the First World War another contest was played out with all the military glamor, chivalric values and deadly outcome of a medieval, knightly tournament. This was the battle in the air between the first primitive aircraft and the intrepid aviators who flew them. This image of air war is brought nobly to light in the memoirs of Ernst Udet, the German ace of aces, whose impressive wartime record was second only to the legendary Red Baron. Written in a jaunty, Boys Own style, Udet paints a romantic picture of his experiences and captures what perhaps many young pilots must have felt as they flew off each day to duel with the enemy, the elements and an unreliable technology. Ace of the Black Cross also illustrates the way in which war and defeat left this young generation of tough, spirited, individuals rootless and restless. After the war Udet used his flying skills to give displays to crowds of gawking onlookers, a circus act that left him frustrated and resentful. In 1941, disillusioned and depressed, he shot himself. On the wall before he died he scrawled a message for Goring: Iron man, you have betrayed me.

Synopsis The Black Aces by : Jim Mudcat Grant
For most of the first half of the twentieth century, African-Americans were excluded from Organized Baseball. But their love of the game, and their desire to play could not be denied. Despite that ban, "blackball" was being played in just about every cow pasture and field available throughout the country. Black players criss-crossed the country in Negro League games and on barnstorming tours, bringing baseball to places where the Major Leagues never dreamed of going. Many gifted athletes never got the chance to compete in the Majors, until the door was finally opened in 1947 with the signing of Jackie Robinson and Larry Doby. Once given that chance to compete, African-Americans showed the country that they were deserving of the opportunity. Many became superstars, but, on the mound, only 13 African-Americans ever reached the magic plateau of twenty wins in a season. This book tells the story of those thirteen men and a few of their predecessors, the obstacles they faced, and the determination they showed to succeed. But it is a story about so much more than just baseball. Against the backdrop of their grit and determination, it reflects the story of all African-American baseball players through the creation of the Negro Leagues, the evolution of the game, and the parallel integration of baseball and America.

Synopsis Ace, The Black Stallion by : Ann Feifel
Julia Beemer lived an idyllic life on her parent's Quarter Horse ranch, in Wyoming. Grief-stricken after her mother's death, Julia and her father struggle to carry on. Casia, once her mother's horse, becomes Julia's best friend and soul mate. The gentle chestnut mare comforts Julia through her darkest days. Determined to keep her mother's dream alive, Julia and her father continue with the Quarter Horse breeding program on the ranch, but tragedy strikes once again. Casia's stunning black colt, Ace, born with a most extraordinary marking on his forehead, is left an orphan. Ace, a feisty young colt with a will to survive, matures into a spectacular stallion. When a neighbor's filly goes missing, then Ace makes a perilous escape from his paddock, searchers come up empty handed. BOTH HORSES HAVE MYSTERIOUSLY DISAPPEARED Read Ace, The Black Stallion, to find out where the missing horses have been, and why Julia thinks she should keep it a secret. A delightful, horse-lover's mystery adventure story, for all middle-grade to adult readers, who are never too old to enjoy a story about horses. *A must-read, even if you've never owned a horse.* An excellent choice to encourage independent reading, and read-aloud for teachers in the classroom. Appropriate for homeschool materials, and middle-grade school libraries. *Includes a lightly graphic description of a veterinarian assisting a horse having difficulties while giving birth*SAVE AND PROTECT THE WILDHORSES OF NORTH AMERICAIn my story, Julia finds out about the devastating, and often fatal, occurrences, during wild horse round-ups. Although my story isfictional, the terror and horrors these horses experience during theround-ups, is anything but fictional.I only wish that all the wild horses and burros could find safe, secret hideaways like Ace and his band, where they can live inpeace, wild and free.***Every little girl should know a horse's love, and every horseshould have their own little girl. Those of us that have known thatlove, are never complete without a horse in their lives.A quote, by fellow horse-lover, Candy Jacomella-Blass

Synopsis Ace by : Angela Chen
An engaging exploration of what it means to be asexual in a world that’s obsessed with sexual attraction, and what the ace perspective can teach all of us about desire and identity. What exactly is sexual attraction and what is it like to go through life not experiencing it? What does asexuality reveal about gender roles, about romance and consent, and the pressures of society? This accessible examination of asexuality shows that the issues that aces face—confusion around sexual activity, the intersection of sexuality and identity, navigating different needs in relationships—are the same conflicts that nearly all of us will experience. Through a blend of reporting, cultural criticism, and memoir, Ace addresses the misconceptions around the “A” of LGBTQIA and invites everyone to rethink pleasure and intimacy. Journalist Angela Chen creates her path to understanding her own asexuality with the perspectives of a diverse group of asexual people. Vulnerable and honest, these stories include a woman who had blood tests done because she was convinced that “not wanting sex” was a sign of serious illness, and a man who grew up in a religious household and did everything “right,” only to realize after marriage that his experience of sexuality had never been the same as that of others. Disabled aces, aces of color, gender-nonconforming aces, and aces who both do and don’t want romantic relationships all share their experiences navigating a society in which a lack of sexual attraction is considered abnormal. Chen’s careful cultural analysis explores how societal norms limit understanding of sex and relationships and celebrates the breadth of sexuality and queerness.
