Synopsis Grand Designs by : Lara Kriegel
With this richly illustrated history of industrial design reform in nineteenth-century Britain, Lara Kriegel demonstrates that preoccupations with trade, labor, and manufacture lay at the heart of debates about cultural institutions during the Victorian era. Through aesthetic reform, Victorians sought to redress the inferiority of British crafts in comparison to those made on the continent and in the colonies. Declaring a crisis of design and workmanship among the British laboring classes, reformers pioneered schools of design, copyright protections, and spectacular displays of industrial and imperial wares, most notably the Great Exhibition of 1851. Their efforts culminated with the establishment of the South Kensington Museum, predecessor to the Victoria and Albert Museum, which stands today as home to the world’s foremost collection of the decorative and applied arts. Kriegel’s identification of the significant links between markets and museums, and between economics and aesthetics, amounts to a rethinking of Victorian cultural formation. Drawing on a wide range of sources, including museum guidebooks, design manuals, illustrated newspapers, pattern books, and government reports, Kriegel brings to life the many Victorians who claimed a stake in aesthetic reform during the middle years of the nineteenth century. The aspiring artists who attended the Government School of Design, the embattled provincial printers who sought a strengthened industrial copyright, the exhibition-going millions who visited the Crystal Palace, the lower-middle-class consumers who learned new principles of taste in metropolitan museums, and the working men of London who critiqued the city’s art and design collections—all are cast by Kriegel as leading cultural actors of their day. Grand Designs shows how these Victorians vied to upend aesthetic hierarchies in an imperial age and, in the process, to refashion London’s public culture.

Synopsis Grand Designs by : Kevin McCloud
Grand Designs provides inspiration and information to anyone thinking of taking on the challenge of building their own house. During the 1990s, architects and designers have increasingly called for us to change our houses to reflect the way we live, exchanging poky kitchens for larger living spaces, having more room than one bathroom, and taking the surrounding environment into our plans. What better way of accomodating such demands than by designing and building your own home, creating a living space suited to your changing lifestyle? This aspirational book not only provides a guide to the series, but it illustrates the increasingly fashionable desire to design and build a home of one's own.

Synopsis The Grand Design by : Joy Callaway
She has one last chance to prove she chose the right course for her life. In 1908, young Dorothy Tuckerman chafes under the bland, beige traditions of her socialite circles. Only the aristocracy’s annual summer trips to The Greenbrier resort in West Virginia spark her imagination. In this naturally beautiful place, an unexpected romance with an Italian racecar driver gives Dorothy a taste of the passion and adventure she wants. But her family intervenes, sentencing Dorothy to the life she hopes to escape. Thirty-eight years later, as World War II draws to a close, Dorothy has done everything a woman in the early twentieth century should not: she has divorced her husband—scandalous—and established America’s first interior design firm—shocking. Now, Dorothy returns to The Greenbrier with the assignment to restore it to something even greater than its original glory. With her beloved company’s future hanging in the balance and brimming with daring, unconventional ideas, Dorothy has one more chance to give her dreams wings or succumb to her what society tells her is her inescapable fate. Synopsis Grand Designs Australia by : Bauer Books
From a home created within an old electrical substation to another like a sprawling tent under canvas, from a home inspired by Japanese origami to another designed around a shipping container - these are the intriguing and resourceful design solutions featured in The Best of Grand Designs Volume 2, the much awaited sequel to the best-selling The Best of Grand Designs. It features 24 inspiring homes that have featured in series six to eight of the iconic home design TV program, with projects straddling the continent, from Tasmania to Queensland, South Australia to northern NSW, in coastal, country and city locations. As with its forerunner, the book is a tribute to Australian home owners and their architects and designers, who, undeterred by constraints such as a tight budget, a short timeline, a tricky site and heritage regulations, dared to dream and saw their grand visions become reality.
