Synopsis Medieval and Renaissance Art by : Glyn Davies
This important and beautiful book accompanies the opening of the Victoria and Albert Museum's spectacular new Medieval and Renaissance galleries. Among the textiles, paintings, sculpture, glass, metalwork, prints, manuscripts, furniture, ceramics and jewelry featured here are such renowned treasures as the Devonshire tapestries, the Leonardo Notebooks, Donatellos Ascension relief, the reliquary casket of St. Thomas Becket, and many more astonishing works. Organized thematically, the book explores the social contexts responsible for these captivating objects, both commonplace and precious, recovering the attitudes of makers and owners of the time toward artistic practice. Rather than adopting the traditional sharp distinction between the Medieval and Renaissance, the authors explore aspects of the whole of this long period in European design and manufacture: an approach that emphasizes the continuities and gradual developments that were often as significant as sudden upheaval. A general historical introduction to the social and political background is followed by chapters that explore concepts of art, workshops, and sales, the classical past, ornament, religious art, health and body, and the ways in which objects themselves express the attitudes of their owners.

Synopsis Military and Religious Life in the Middle Ages and at the Period of the Renaissance (Classic Reprint) by : Paul Lacroix
Excerpt from Military and Religious Life in the Middle Ages and at the Period of the Renaissance This transformation took 'place gradually and slowly, as being necessary and inevitable, by the continued and simultaneous enfranchisement of men and of land. The slave whom paganism, as it disappeared, handed over to the Christian religion, passed first from a state of servitude to a state of bondage, from bondage he rose to mortmain, and from mortmain to liberty. Under the in uence of the bishops, legislation was formed upon the principles of Christian morality. In the great councils of the nation, and in the royal councils, they gave a Christian direction to the government of the country, and more than once preserved national unity from being broken up. The bishops, says Gibbon, constructed the French monarchy just as the bees construct the hive. At the same time the popes were incessant in their efforts to convert all the Christian peoples into one vast republic; and they attained their pur pose in a great measure. The idea was a sublime one, springing so naturally from the unity of the doctrines which all were required to profess. As early as the twelfth century the idea was thus enunciated by Tertullian in his Apologetica - We remain strangers to your factions and to your parties. The republic of the human race is what we demand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Synopsis Studies in the Latin of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance (Classic Reprint) by : Victor S. Clark
Excerpt from Studies in the Latin of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance The influence of political and social changes upon Latin is more manifest in profane than in religious literature. In this connection Gregory, B who wrote at the several reasons. He was really among the first of the mediaeval chroniclers, and yet he wrote in the twilight of classical culture. His works occasionally give us a glimpse into the life of his age, and a view of the personality of the author and his relations to his contemporaries that is interesting, and goes far toward making his writings real literature. Gregory is still an individual, not a mere member of an order, like the monkish chroniclers. He was one of the last who wrote when Latin was still a spoken language among the commons.* It was his mother tongue.1' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Synopsis Science and Literature in the Middle Ages by : Paul LaCroix
Excerpt from Science and Literature in the Middle Ages: And at the Period of the Renaissance I could only make a succinct, and often incomplete, summary in compiling this book, which comprises so many different subjects; but I have at all events conformed as nearly as possible to the instructions of the late M. Firmin Didot, who urged me to leave to others the display of profound and minute erudition content yourself with being an ingenious, intelligent, and, if possible, an agreeable interpreter; try to make yourself read and under stood by everybody. The greatest successes are achieved less by savants than by vulgarisers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
