Synopsis The American Wonderland, the Yellowstone National Park (Classic Reprint) by : Charles T. Whitmell
Excerpt from The American Wonderland, the Yellowstone National Park In a letter recently received he writes It may be proper to say, in excuse of the roughness of some of the sketches, that they are almost untouched travel sketches, quite half, if not more, of the Park ones being taken on the logger-head of the Mexican saddle of my Cayuse, for I often feared to dismount lest the lariat should break, and I should be left to 'weary plod my homeward way' with the thermometer drop, drop, dropping down to freezing point. You will agree with me that Mr. Thomas need have sent us no excuse the very want of finish in some of the pictures is one of their chiefest charms - they come, as it were, red-hot from the artist's anvil. One more preliminary statement - I have been greatly embarrassed 'by the magnitude of the task undertaken, and the following account will be found to contain a good deal that was necessarily omitted during the reading of the Paper. Synopsis Gateway to Yellowstone by : Lee Whittlesey
By 1883 when the rail lines of the Northern Pacific reached the tiny town of Cinnabar, Montana Territory, newspaper and magazine stories of the wonders to be found in Yellowstone National Park had been firing the imaginations of eager potential visitors around the world for a decade. Once the railroad completed that critical bit of their route, the world was poised to actually see the magic of Yellowstone, and the prospect of a trip was no longer just exciting—it was a possibility. It seemed like everyone who could afford the ticket—from middle class residents of New York City to Army Generals William Tecumseh Sherman and Philip Sheridan to President Chester A. Arthur—wanted to ride the train to see Yellowstone . Their jumping off point for their journey into “Wonderland” was the town envisioned by Hugo Hoppe, a raucous Wild West town poised for greatness as the Gateway to all of Yellowstone’s offerings. The town of Cinnabar, Montana, no longer exists, but when it did, it served as the immediate railroad gateway for a generation of visitors to Yellowstone National Park. Visitors passed through its streets from September 1, 1883, through June 15, 1903 This book tells the story of its place in the West, and the legend of the town and its promoters. Its story is one of aspiration and dreams in the American West and its place in the legend and lore of Yellowstone has kept the spirit of Cinnabar alive for more than a hundred years since the town itself faded away.

Synopsis Yellowstone Autumn by : W. D. Wetherell
Although Yellowstone is our oldest, most iconic, and most popular national park, it is perhaps, in W. D. Wetherell's words, America s least-known best-known place. Wetherell, arriving at the park on the eve of his fifty-fifth birthday, feels the need to examine where life s mileage has brought him. In the encounter that follows, a writer entering late middle age confronts not only a magnificent corner of the vast American landscape but also the American experience itself. Detailed in the wise, humorous, and lyrical language that has long distinguished W. D. Wetherell s award-winning fiction, this introspective journey merges the fascinating story of Yellowstone s history and geography with the author s own story of marriage and aging, of fatherhood, and of the solace to be found in the beauty of the natural world. Most of all it s a loving tribute to Yellowstone in autumn, the season when the park and its glories are absolutely at their peak.
