Synopsis The A B C of the Government of the United States (Classic Reprint) by : Perley Morse

Excerpt from The A B C of the Government of the United States The citizen of the United States in his 'daily life comes in contact with at least three and sometimes with five distinct divisions of government. If he lives in the South, he will be controlled by the Federal, State and County governments; if he lives in Greater New York, he will be under the Federal, State, County, City and Borough supervision. All of these govern ments exist on the same area but distinct from each other and without communication or conference; each has its own powers, finances and officers. Within its own sphere, each is supreme. Common to all government is a system of checks and balances in order that no individual or group of individuals may gain autocratic power. The extent of each zone or circle of government and its activities are sketched in the chapters which follow. Synopsis The Government of the United States (Classic Reprint) by : L. S. Shimmell

Excerpt from The Government of the United States Many teachers entertain a conviction that most text-books for use in grammar and high-school grades, especially in the latter, require too much time for a thorough mastery of their contents. The number of subjects taught in schools Of all kinds and grades has greatly multiplied in recent years; but the school day is no longer than it was - in fact, it is shorter; nor has the school year been lengthened much, least of all in towns and cities. Consequently there is much complaint concerning overloaded courses Of study and crowded annual, weekly, and daily programs. There are those among educators, and others interested in educational improvement, who advocate a reduction in the number of subjects taught and a more intensive study Of the branches retained. It is not within the province Of this Preface to predict how the evil complained of will be remedied; but experience in the schoolroom has led many teachers to believe that less voluminous text-books would be at least a partial remedy. If the demands of the age require an increasingly greater number of subjects to be taught, it follows that less time must be given to each subject. But unless the text-books arc proportionately reduced in their scope, the attempt to get over them will result in skimming and Skipping, and consequently in an imperfect and evanescent knowledge of the contents. Synopsis The Government of the United States by : William Bennett Munro

Excerpt from The Government of the United States: National, State, and Local The plan, scope, content, and temper of this book are in large measure the outgrowth of my experience as a teacher. My students, by the drift of their questions and discussions, have moulded my ideas of what a text-book ought to contain. This book is theirs as much as it is mine. That fact may help to explain why some features of American government are dilated upon at considerable length, while others are left as self-evident propositions to the perception of the reader. It explains, moreover, why the same problem is occasionally discussed from different angles, even though this has in volved some degree Of repetition. And if the general tone of the book betrays an optimist, my sufficient answer is that no man can be for many years associated with the American undergraduate and remain anything else. Synopsis The History of the Government of the United States (Classic Reprint) by : Jacob Harris Patton

Excerpt from The History of the Government of the United States He is aware that, notwithstanding the assistance rendered by friends in America, he must have fallen into not a few errors, and Without asking to be excused for these, he desires to plead in extenuation that the book has been written under the constant pressure of public duties as well as of other private work, and that the difficulty of obtaining in Europe correct information regarding the constitutions and laws of American States and the rules of party organizations is very great. Synopsis American History and Government by : James Albert Woodburn

Excerpt from American History and Government: A d104-Book on the History and Civil Government of the United States It is safe to say that a very large proportion of our pupils leave school without becoming sufficiently familiar with our system of government. The curriculum of the high school is crowded. New subjects are constantly being introduced for one reason or another, and this tends to the undue crowding of the course of study and to bringing into the high school many subjects that properly belong to the college. The result is that time is not allowed for the thorough drilling and for the supplementary reading on those subjects in which some solid elementary knowledge should be expected of all the pupils in our public schools. Synopsis The United States Government by : George N. Lamphere

Excerpt from The United States Government: Its Organization and Practical Workings The cause which suggested the publication of this book was my per sonal observation of a lack, 'ou the part of many persons, of a proper knowledge of the Government of the United States. I have observed many times that but few persons, in comparison, are acquainted with the most general provisions of the Constitution of the United States, and the terms of the Declaration of Independence. Hoping that the matter in this book may prove so interesting as to attract the notice of a considerable number, I have incorporated those two immortal documents, with a view of increasing the num ber who will have a better knowledge of them. It may not have been suggested to the ordinary reader that those documents are found printed in but few books. Youths in the schools should read and study them, and also the contents of this book, for there can be no higher study for the rising generation than that of the Government under which they live, and will be soon called upon to maintain and perpetuate by their aid and influence.
