The oldest continuously serving division in the U.S. Army, the 1st Infantry Division, called the "Big Red One" because of the red numeral "1" on the uniform shoulder patch, was the first regular army division organized in June 1917 to fight in France with the Allied armies. Since then, 1st Infantry Division's battle honors are Tunisia, Sicily, Normandy, the Bulge, Germany. Postwar, the division served in Europe, Vietnam, Desert Shield, Desert Storm and Bosnia.

The 1st Infantry Division was established in 1917 to participate in the fighting in France and faced the major German offensives of 1918. In the first of a two-volume study, the author presents an extremely detailed record of the organization, doctrine and equipment of U.S. Army infantry divisions during the latter part of World War II. After examining the state of the U.S. Army during the 1940-43 period, the author focuses on the 1943-45 period, and presents each of the division's sub-units-- from the divisional HQ to an infantry battalion, from the divisional artillery to its combat engineer element. For each, the author examines their organization (down to the lowest level possible), their training and tactical doctrine, and the equipment, vehicles and weapons they used. The men who served with in the 1st Infantry Division with F company, 52nd Infantry, (LRP) later redesignated as Company I, 75th Infantry (Ranger) --engaged in some of the fiercest, bloodiest fighting during the Vietnam War, suffering a greater relative aggregate of casualties that any other LRRP/LRP/ Ranger company. Their base was Lai Khe, within hailing distance of the Vietcong central headquarters, a mile inside Cambodia, with its vast stockpiles of weapons and thousands of transient VC and NVA soldiers. Recondo-qualified Bill Goshen was there, and has written the first account of these battle-hardened soldiers.
