Synopsis That Lady by : Kate O'Brien
AN AWARD-WINNING AND REMARKABLE IRISH NOVELIST 'A fuller appreciation of modern literature and a greater understanding of twentieth century Ireland' IRISH TIMES 'Writes with almost poetic intensity of the ecstasy and anguish of love' VAL HENNESSY 'Stunning, unforgettable stories of sexuality and families, of self-discovery' MICHELE ROBERTS Spain in the years before the Armada, and high passion meets high politics. Ana, Princess of Eboli is a remarkable woman. Married at thirteen and losing an eye in a duel a year later, Ana is also heiress of Spain's leading family, widow of Philip II's wisest counsellor and rumoured to be the King's mistress. Unexpectedly - and unwisely - she falls in love with Don Antonio Perez, dandy, adulterer, skilled politician. With her unusual looks, her aristocratic arrogance and the simplicities of her faith, Ana cannot understand why her private life should become entangled with the affairs of state and, finally, incur the terrible vindictiveness of the King himself . . . Kate O'Brien's understanding and love of Spain enhance the beauty of this passionate and intelligent novel.

Synopsis The Lady Swings by : Dottie Dodgion
Dottie Dodgion is a jazz drummer who played with the best. A survivor, she lived an entire lifetime before she was seventeen. Undeterred by hardships she defied the odds and earned a seat as a woman in the exclusive men’s club of jazz. Her dues-paying path as a musician took her from early work with Charles Mingus to being hired by Benny Goodman at Basin Street East on her first day in New York. From there she broke new ground as a woman who played a “man’s instrument” in first-string, all-male New York City jazz bands. Her inspiring memoir talks frankly about her music and the challenges she faced, and shines a light into the jazz world of the 1960s and 1970s. Vivid and always entertaining, The Lady Swings tells Dottie Dodgion's story with the same verve and straight-ahead honesty that powered her playing. A Variety Best Music Book of 2021

Synopsis What's That Lady Doing? by : Lou Sanders
For fans of Really Good Actually and I'm Glad My Mom Died 'A deftness that catches your breath' - Fern Brady 'An incredible piece of writing' - Brett Goldstein 'Interrogates moments of trauma with insight, kindness and humanity' - John Robins This is a book about mistakes. And why we should de-flower shame in all its messy, complicated glory... Hello! It's Lou here... I've poured my heart and guts on to the page and shared my soul in this book. This won't be for everyone but I hope it helps the people it does connect with. We all have stories and I think its useful to share them, I think it helps unite us and in some ways it helps us release some shame. I've been alarmingly truthful and sincere, because I think society would be better if we could all be honest. I've of course used humour too, not as a way to cope (I've processed the darker things that have happened to me), but as a change in pace, some gorgeous light relief, because life is light and dark dancing together in the wind. And I love jokes. If this is the sort of thing you're after, please pick me up and take me to bed (that's the book speaking so a little joke there).
