Synopsis Enchanted Maidens by : James M. Taggart

Spanish villagers tell many folktales that describe in metaphorical language the struggles of young men and women as they emerge from their parental families and join in love. In this book James Taggart presents dozens of orally transmitted tales, including "Snow White," "Cinderella," "Beauty and the Beast," "Blancaflor," and dragonslayer stories, collected from seven villages in the region of CNBceres, and analyzes the differences in male and female approaches to telling them. His study shows how men and women use the tales to grapple with some of the contradictions found in gender relations in their culture, which conditions men to be sexually assertive and to marry virgins and which teaches women to fear the men who court them. Taggart interprets the male-female dialogue voiced through storytelling by linking the content of specific tales to the life experiences and gender of the storyteller. Men and women, he finds, carry out an exchange of ideas by retelling the same stories and altering the plots and characters to express their respective views of courtship. This indirect narrative dialogue conveys an understanding of the opposite sex and establishes a common model of marriage that permits men and women to overcome their fear of each other and bond in heterosexual love.

Synopsis The Uses of Enchantment by : Bruno Bettelheim

Winner of the National Book Award and National Book Critics Circle Award "A charming book about enchantment, a profound book about fairy tales."—John Updike, The New York Times Book Review Bruno Bettelheim was one of the great child psychologists of the twentieth century and perhaps none of his books has been more influential than this revelatory study of fairy tales and their universal importance in understanding childhood development. Analyzing a wide range of traditional stories, from the tales of Sindbad to “The Three Little Pigs,” “Hansel and Gretel,” and “The Sleeping Beauty,” Bettelheim shows how the fantastical, sometimes cruel, but always deeply significant narrative strands of the classic fairy tales can aid in our greatest human task, that of finding meaning for one’s life.

Synopsis Breaking the Spell by : Sally Grindley

Gr 3-5 Open this book and step into a world of enchantment in which seven well-crafted tales join forces to weave the spell of story. These are original selections, several of which are based on old myths, or are retellings of folktales by respected authors such as Jane Yolen, Joan Aiken, and Vivian French. Tales take place around the world in Spain, dancers take to the air; in Japan, a paper garden blooms and dies; in India, a snake princess bewitches a prince; in ancient Egypt, true love breaks the curse of a goddess. The stories, though very different, follow one another in a fluid manner. Field's folksy illustrations, which appear on nearly every page, sustain the mood and provide continuity. The paintings are lively, thick with color, and vary from small decorations to full-page interpretation. Several of the selections have a familiar tone to them, yet they are fresh and satisfying. Perfect for bedtime reading aloud, or for reading alone, this collection will find a welcome place in libraries, and can add substance to the multicultural niche.
