Synopsis To Take Place by : Jonathan Z. Smith
In this broad-ranging inquiry into ritual and its relation to place, Jonathan Z. Smith prepares the way for a new approach to the comparative study of religion. Smith stresses the importance of place—in particular, constructed ritual environments—to a proper understanding of the ways in which "empty" actions become rituals. He structures his argument around the territories of the Tjilpa aborigines in Australia and two sites in Jerusalem—the temple envisioned by Ezekiel and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The first of these locales—the focus of one of the more important contemporary theories of religious ritual—allows Smith to raise questions concerning the enterprise of comparison. His close examination of Eliade's influential interpretation of the Tjilpa tradition leads to a powerful critique of the approach to religion, myth, and ritual that begins with cosmology and the category of "The Sacred." In substance and in method, To Take Place represents a significant advance toward a theory of ritual. It is of great value not only to historians of religion and students of ritual, but to all, whether social scientists or humanists, who are concerned with the nature of place. "This book is extraordinarily stimulating in prompting one to think about the ways in which space, or place, is perceived, marked, and utilized religiously. . . . A provocative example of the application of humanistic geography to our understanding of what takes place in religion."—Dale Goldsmith, Interpretation

Synopsis The Gulf War Did Not Take Place by : Jean Baudrillard
In a provocative analysis written during the unfolding drama of 1992, Baudrillard draws on his concepts of simulation and the hyperreal to argue that the Gulf War did not take place but was a carefully scripted media event--a "virtual" war. Patton's introduction argues that Baudrillard, more than any other critic of the Gulf War, correctly identified the stakes involved in the gestation of the New World Order.

Synopsis Things That Must Take Place by : Tony Kessinger
Like it or not, the Bible is clear about the events of the end time. They are certain to occur. The reputation of the Apostle John as well as the very words of Jesus assure the reader over and over again of the unavoidable necessity of the events taking place. Things That Must Take Place examines in detail Revelation 4-22 and establishes a sequence of events which helps the reader visualize the coming time of unprecedented trouble.

Synopsis Twerp by : Mark Goldblatt
It's not like I meant for him to get hurt. . . . Julian Twerski isn't a bully. He's just made a big mistake. So when he returns to school after a weeklong suspension, his English teacher offers him a deal: if he keeps a journal and writes about the terrible incident that got him and his friends suspended, he can get out of writing a report on Shakespeare. Julian jumps at the chance. And so begins his account of life in sixth grade--blowing up homemade fireworks, writing a love letter for his best friend (with disastrous results), and worrying whether he's still the fastest kid in school. Lurking in the background, though, is the one story he can't bring himself to tell, the one story his teacher most wants to hear. Inspired by Mark Goldblatt's own childhood growing up in 1960s Queens, Twerp shines with humor and heart. This remarkably powerful story will have readers laughing and crying right along with these flawed but unforgettable characters. Praise for Twerp: A Bankstreet Best Book of the Year A Junior Library Guild Selection A Summer Top Ten Kids’ Indie Next List Pick A Sunshine State Award Finalist “Reminiscent of The Perks of Being a Wallflower. . . . Synopsis Take Place by : Thomas E. Crow
For a medium so potentially "disembodied" and transparent, photography can offer a unique capacity to concretize place, especially when used in art installations in which photographs may be assembled from numerous sources and locations. Take Place investigates this particular implementation of photography through various scholarly disciplines--art history, photography theory, the history of architecture and social geography--and through creative disciplines such as installation art, performance, architecture and especially multimedia projects. Take Place offers points of departure for the study of photography as it is deployed within other media.

Synopsis When Will the Rapture Take Place? by : John Riggs
The doctrine of the rapture is one of the most interesting subjects in the Bible. Unfortunately, it also is taught and preached in the most unbiblical ways. There are a lot of false beliefs concerning the rapture, such as the following: Can we know when it will happen? Is it pre-, mid-, or post tribulation? Preterist (already happened)? Amillennialist (it will never happen)? What are the signs? When do the signs officially start? Which verses teach the rapture, and which teach the second coming? It is amazing to listen to the teachers and preachers and how they contradict each other, each claiming to have the mind of God. This book will give you a fresh way to view the doctrine of the rapture.

Synopsis The accident did not take place by : Sam Ward
Somewhere on the other side of the world, a plane is falling from the sky. You can see it on your laptop. You can watch it happening on YouTube. You can hit rewind and watch it burning on repeat. Combining play text with experimental book design, the accident did not take place is a hyper-real exploration of the way we consume information, and the way information consumes us; a frenetic, head-on collision with a world thoroughly mediated by screens, a world possessed with post-truth hysteria, a world yearning for contact with those who seem so far away.

Synopsis What Will Soon Take Place by : Tania Runyan
What Will Soon Take Place is an imaginative journey through the book of Revelation. It offers a poet's view of the prophetic, not in the sense of seeking out clues to the "end times," but a means of taking this strange, fantastic book of scripture and letting it read its way into personal lives.
