Faye Pearson was appointed as a missionary to Taiwan in 1968. She served as a campus minister, taught in theological education, and worked in established churches as well as new church starts. She has also served as a counselor and administrator for Baptist work in East Asia. She has taught and led seminars and lectured in seminaries and Bible schools in more than twelve Asian countries, including Mainland China. Even as relations between Taiwan and the People's Republic of China continue to be strained, investment by Taiwanese businesses in China is growing every year. Between 1978 and 1994, Taiwan businesses invested $10 billion in China, 10% of the total foreign investment during that period. This study describes the magnitude and importance of this investment. Hsing demonstrates the role of a shared cultural heritage and language and the role of Chinese local government in building networks of firms in the two countries.

Taiwan's Protection Against Chinese Attack

Jennifer M. Wei argues that construction and perceptions of language and identity parallel sociopolitical transformations, and language and identity crises arise during power transitions. Under these premises, language and identity are never well-defined or well-bounded. Instead, they are best viewed as political symbols subject to manipulation and exploitation during socio-historical upheavals. A choice of language—from phonological shibboleth, Mandarin, or Taiwanese, to choice of official language—cuts to the heart of contested cultural notions of self and other, with profound implications for nationalism, national unity and ethno-linguistic purism. In a concerted effort to expand Taiwan’s presence across the Indo-Pacific, President Tsai Ing-wen has introduced the New Southbound Policy (NSP) to strengthen Taipei’s relationships with the 10 countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), six states in South Asia (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan), Australia, and New Zealand. The policy is designed to leverage Taiwan’s cultural, educational, technological, agricultural, and economic assets to enhance Taiwan’s regional integration.
