Synopsis Synthetic Peptides by : Gregory Grant

The first synthetic peptides were produced a century ago. In the ensuing period, they have developed as valuable research tools that are readily available to all researchers. However, since most researchers do not make their own peptides, they are often unfamiliar with not only the synthetic chemistry but also with important and useful aspects of design, analysis, handling, and applications. This volume is the second edition of a volume that was first published 10 years ago. It is written by experts in the field who provide detailed descriptions as well as practical advice for producing and using synthetic peptides. The various chapters cover peptide design considerations, the synthetic chemistry, the evaluation of the synthetic product, and the modern applications of synthetic peptides. This includes the basic principles of peptide structure, analysis and chain assembly as well as the latest in selective disulfide bond formation, new strategies for the production of large peptides, and sequencing peptides by mass spectrometry. This book was designed with the intent of providing useful information both for the novices to the field as well as more seasoned practitioners. Its contents will help prevent problems commonly encountered and allow scientists to optimize their use of synthetic peptides.

Synopsis Peptides for Youth by : Susan Valle

The American Peptide Society (APS) provides a forum for advancing and promoting knowledge of the chemistry and biology of peptides. The approximately one thousand members of the Society come from North America and from more than thirty other countries throughout the world. Establishment of the APS was a result of the rapid worldwide growth that has occurred in peptide-related research, and of the increasing interaction of peptide scientists with virtually all fields of science. Peptides for Youth: The Proceedings of the the 20th American Peptide Symposium will highlight many of the recent developments in peptide science, with a particular emphasis on how these advances are being applied to basic problems in biology and medicine. The 20th American Peptide Symposium will take place June 26 - 30, 2007 in Montreal, Canada.

Synopsis Immunological Recognition of Peptides in Medicine and Biology by : N. D. Zegers

Immunological Recognition of Peptides in Medicine and Biology gives a state-of-the-art overview on the use of peptides and peptide-ligand interactions, and the critical role they play in recognition patterns for the regulation of various biological functions. A wide range of applications are discussed, including some experimental preclinical ones such as epitope mapping, peptide libraries, and production of amino acid-specific antibodies and their therapeutic use in oncology and infectious disease vaccines. Each chapter also includes step-by-step protocols to aid in actual experiments. Several alternative techniques and strategies are discussed by different authors offering the reader an opportunity to select the most favorable application for a specific biological problem.

Synopsis Peptide Synthesis and Applications by : John Howl

Hands-on experts describe in step-by-step detail the key methodologies of contemporary peptide synthesis and illustrate their numerous applications. The techniques presented include protocols for chemical ligation, the synthesis of cyclic and phosphotyrosine-containing peptides, lipoamino acid- and sugar-conjugated peptides, and peptide purification and analyses. Additional chapters detail methodologies and instrumentation for high-throughput peptide synthesis, many different applications of peptides as novel research tools and biological probes, and the design and application of fluorescent substrate-based peptides that can be used to determine the selectivity and activity of peptidases. A practical guide to the identification of proteins using mass spectrometric analyses of peptide mixtures is also included.

Synopsis Peptides by : Xiao-Yu Hu

The Fifth Chinese Peptide Symposium, hosted by Lanzhou University, was held at Lanzhou, China July 14-17, 1998, with 156 participants, including 30 scientists from abroad, representing nine countries. The four-day conference was both intense and spiritually rewarding. Our goal for CPS-98 was to provide a forum for the exchange of knowledge, cooperation and friendship between the international and Chinese scientific communities, and we believe this goal was met. The symposium consisted of 8 sessions with 42 oral and 90 poster presentations, including synthetic methods, molecular diversity and peptide libraries, structure and conformation of peptides and proteins, bioactive peptides, peptide immunology, De Novo design and synthesis of proteins and peptides, ligand-receptor interactions, the chemistry-biology-interface and challenging problems in peptides. The enthusiastic cooperation and excellent contributions were gratifying and the active response of the invited speakers contributed to the success of the symposium. The presentations were of excellent caliber and represented the most current and significant aspects of peptide science. Dr. Kit Lam of the University of Arizona and Dr. Yun-Hua Ye of Peking University were the recipients of “The Cathay Award” sponsored by the H. H. Liu Education Foundation, offered for their seminal contribution in peptide science and the Chinese Peptide Symposium. Four outstanding young scientists were selected by the organizing committee to receive awards sponsored by Haikou Nanhai Pharmaceutical Industry Co. Ltd. (Zhong He Group).

Synopsis Synthetic Peptides as Antigens by : S. Muller

This newest edition to the Laboratory Techniques Series gives current state of the art use of synthetic peptides in molecular biology and practical protocols on how to conjugate peptides, immunize animals with peptides and monitor immune responses to peptides in vitro. It gives background information on antigenic specificity, prediction of antigenic sites in proteins and applications of peptides in immunology and virology, as probes in diagnosis and as vaccines. The book also describes antigenicity of proteins and methods to localize antigenic sites as well as methods for predicting epitoxes, and gives detailed protocols for peptide-carrier conjugation, immunization with peptides, and peptide immunoassays. The volume also describes typical use of antipeptide antibodies in molecular and cellular biology as well as the use of peptides in the diagnosis of viral infections and autoimmune diseases, and the use of peptides as potential synthetic vaccines. An excellent edition to an excellent series, available in hardbound and paperback.

Synopsis Peptide Arrays on Membrane Supports by : Joachim Koch

Proteins interacting with diverse ligands - proteins, peptides or DNA - are the basic principles underlying many biological processes, such as antigen-antibody binding, signal transduction or receptor binding. The technique of oligopeptide synthesis on a cellulose membrane and the subsequent binding assays allow the investigation of protein interactions. A particular advantage of these peptide arrays (SPOT - technology) is the high number of oligopeptide probes that can be tested in parallel. Detailed protocols for peptide synthesis, and the analysis of protein-protein, protein-DNA interactions as well as epitope mapping are presented in this manual. It is ideally suited not only for basic research laboratories but also for diagnostic and therapeutic applications since many diseases are related to dysfunctions in protein recognition and binding.
