Lexicographica. Series Maior features monographs and edited volumes on the topics of lexicography and meta-lexicography. Works from the broader domain of lexicology are also included, provided they strengthen the theoretical, methodological and empirical basis of lexicography and meta-lexicography. The almost 150 books published in the series since its founding in 1984 clearly reflect the main themes and developments of the field. The publications focus on aspects of lexicography such as micro- and macrostructure, typology, history of the discipline, and application-oriented lexicographical documentation.

Distinguished linguistics scholar Anatoly Liberman set out the frame for this volume in An Analytic Dictionary of English Etymology. Here, Liberman's landmark scholarship lay the groundwork for his forthcoming multivolume analytic dictionary of the English language. A Bibliography of English Etymology is a broadly conceptualized reference tool that provides source materials for etymological research. For each word's etymology, there is a bibliographic entry that lists the word origin's primary sources, specifically, where it was first found in use. Die Stärken der Fachsprachenforschung lagen bisher in der sorgfältigen quantitativen und qualitativen Analyse umfangreicher Materialkorpora sowie in den zahlreichen Versuchen, neue linguistische Theorien und Methoden auf ihren spezifischen Untersuchungsgegenstand anzuwenden. Kritik ist daran geübt worden, daß diese Forschung keine eigene Theorie und keine selbständigen Methoden entwickelt hat. Diese Einwände wurden im Handbuch berücksichtigt. Gleichzeitig verweist das Handbuch auf noch wenige erforschte Gebiete und eröffnet so zukünftige Forschungsperspektiven. All das und noch vieles andere führte zur Formulierung der folgenden Hauptaufgaben: Schaffung eines deutlichen Bewußtseins dafür, welche vergangenen und gegenwärtigen Forschungsaktivitäten trotz unterschiedlicher Ausgangspunkte und Zielsetzungen und trotz der äußerlichen Zugehörigkeit zu anderen Disziplinen als Beiträge zur Fachsprachenforschung aufzufassen sind. Vermittlung der Einsicht in die Notwendigkeit, daß die Fachsprachenforschung eine weitestgehend konsensfähige Theorie der Fachsprachen erarbeiten muß, aus der Methoden und Forschungsprogramme abgeleitet werden können. Despite the great number and diversity of specialised dictionaries and terminologies, several major issues of specialised lexicography still remain unresolved. The articles in this volume intend to discuss and resolve such open questions and, at the same time, spawn further research.

This is a state-of-the-art volume on lexicography at the beginning of the 21st century. It also offers proposals for future theoretical and practical work. The contributions, inspired by the ground-breaking work of Henning Bergenholtz, address topics such as dictionary functions; dictionary users; access routes; dictionary structures; dictionary reviewing; subject-field classifications; data retrieval; corpus lexicography; and collocations and phraseology. The contributors, all highly regarded international scholars in the field of lexicography, show how the theory of lexicographical functions can extend the forefront of the discipline by focusing on dictionary functions and how these meet the needs of users in various types of user situations. Thereby echoing Bergenholtz’s idea that a dictionary is a tool that can help users solve problems encountered in communicative, cognitive and operative situations. The basis for this additional volume are the three volumes of the handbooks Dictionaries. An International Encyclopedia of Lexicography (HSK 5.1–5.3), published between 1989 and 1991. An updating has been perceived as an important desideratum for a considerable time. In the present Supplementary Volume the premises and subjects of HSK 5.1–5.3 are complemented by new articles that take account of the practice-internal and theoretical developments of the last 15 years. Special attention has been given to the following topics: the status and function of lexicographic reference works, the history of lexicography, the theory of lexicography, lexicographic processes, lexicographic training and lexicographic institutions, new metalexicographic methods, electronic and, especially, computer-assisted lexicography.

Leon Kellner was part of the intellectual and cultural elite of imperial Austria. Engaged in politics, a member of his regional parliament, and an essayist of repute, he was also a Zionist leader and confidant of Theodor Herzl. He created an institution for Jews’ cultural, educational, and social advancement modelled on London’s Toynbee Hall, which spread across east-central Europe to great effect. He was also an internationally recognized Shakespeare scholar. Yet for all this, today he is little known. How did someone born into a lower-middle-class Orthodox Jewish family from the province of Galicia come to gain such prominence in the Habsburg empire? Kellner’s is a thoroughly Habsburg Jewish story, spanning east and west and shaped by the empire’s history, politics, and culture. He was a singular character: a Galician Jew at home in Vienna and in Czernowitz, eyes towards Zion, yet content also in London, and never more so than when absorbed in the minutiae of Shakespeare’s texts. Kellner’s world was destroyed twice over: Habsburg Austria came to an end in 1918, east-central European Jewry in 1945. This biography recovers at least part of what was lost.
