Synopsis Swedes in Moline, Illinois by : Lilly Setterdahl

Thousands of Swedes settled in Moline, Illinois, from the late 1840s through the 1920s. For many years they made up the largest ethnic group in the city. They came to work in the plow factories and to join relatives who were here before them. Lilly Setterdahl has drawn from many different sources and brought forward a mosaic of facts and photographs. The reader will learn about the environment facing the new immigrants, how they conquered the challenges of adapting to another culture and language to become Americans and, in many cases, significant contributors to society. Other immigrants groups, no doubt, experienced the same tribulations and rewards. The work at hand is unique in many ways. As far as is known, no other Swedish-American researcher has attempted to include smaller businesses in similar studies. Fifty different business categories are included. Find out where the Swedes worked, shopped and went to church, what papers they read, and which clubs and lodges they joined. What was their journey to America like, their arrival in Moline, and every-day life? Did they ever visit Sweden? These are questions asked by many descendants. Sample descriptions are included. So are first-hand experiences recorded on tape with Swedish Americans in Moline. The work concludes with family histories that cover several generations and reveal the upward movement in society. Sometimes the immigrant trail winds through places in the East, the Midwest and even the West. Many Swedes settled in the farming communities in northwestern Illinois. The connection to Moline then is through their descendants. While the general history of the Swedes in America is relatively well docu-mented, local histories still remain largely untapped. With this richly illustrated publication, Lilly Setterdahl fills one gap on the subject in the Midwest, which was so prominently settled by Swedes.

Synopsis Norwegians, Swedes and More: Destination Dakota Terriory, Benson-Johnson by : Loren Amundson

"Norwegians, Swedes and More" provides a synopsis of our ancestral family components; Norwegians and Swedes as well as those of French, German, English and Canadian descent by way of the St. Lawrence Seaway in Quebec and upstate New York. Part I, Destination Dakota Territory, describes Loren's multifaceted family from all of the above backgrounds and finds them as homesteaders in Minnehaha County, "Dakota" [Dakota Territory, South Dakota]. Part II, Norway to Minnesota, is "all Norwegian" and finds Mavis' families homesteading in Lac qui Parle County in west central Minnesota where they reached their final Vesterheim. This book is the fourth of six about these families, each containing the same core of material to set the stage for individual family presentations. Book Four provides descriptions and stories about Loren's Benson - Johnson Swedish ancestors and descendants after beginning their lives in Eldsberga and Halmstad areas in southwestern Sweden.

Synopsis Swedish-American Borderlands by : Dag Blanck

Reframing Swedish–American relations by focusing on contacts, crossings, and convergences beyond migration Studies of Swedish American history and identity have largely been confined to separate disciplines, such as history, literature, or politics. In Swedish–American Borderlands, this collection edited by Dag Blanck and Adam Hjorthén seeks to reconceptualize and redefine the field of Swedish–American relations by reviewing more complex cultural, social, and economic exchanges and interactions that take a broader approach to the international relationship—ultimately offering an alternative way of studying the history of transatlantic relations. Swedish–American Borderlands studies connections and contacts between Sweden and the United States from the seventeenth century to today, exploring how movements of people have informed the circulation of knowledge and ideas between the two countries. The volume brings together scholars from a wide range of disciplines within the humanities and social sciences to investigate multiple transcultural exchanges between Sweden and the United States. Rather than concentrating on one-way processes or specific national contexts, Swedish–American Borderlands adopts the concept of borderlands to examine contacts, crossings, and convergences between the nations, featuring specific case studies of topics like jazz, architecture, design, genealogy, and more. By placing interactions, entanglements, and cross-border relations at the center of the analysis, Swedish–American Borderlands seeks to bridge disciplinary divides, joining a diverse set of scholars and scholarship in writing an innovative history of Swedish–American relations to produce new understandings of what we perceive as Swedish, American, and Swedish American. Synopsis Minnesota Swedes by : Lilly Setterdahl

Many of the individuals in this study were closely related. They came from an agricultural community in Sweden dominated by a large estate. The pioneers came in search of 'free' land, and they found it in Goodhue County. Former neighbors settled close to one another. Many of the descendants are still tied to the land. The author has endeavored to trace the immigrants from cradle to grave to find out how they fared in their new homeland. But she did not stop there. Whenever possible, she continued her search among the descendants. There are extracts from official records in Sweden and in America for about 320 immigrants. Including their families, the study encompasses more than one thousand individuals. Explore the intricate kinship within the group, name-changes, moves, occupations, farm locations, family members, and much more. The author, a native of Sweden, has studied and written about Swedish immigration history for the last 30 years. This book is a continuation of Minnesota Swedes: The Emigration From Trolle Ljungby 1855-1912 , which she had published in 1996.
