Swedenborg's Secret is the first major study of the eighteenth-century Swedish philosopher and mystic Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772) to be published in English for over fifty years. Using a wealth of historical material, Lars Bergquist paints a vivid portrait of an ambitious and practical man who was one of the greatest figures of the Enlightenment and who captivated generations of thinkers with his stunning vision of human destiny.

In 1744 Swedenborg traveled the Netherlands to gather material for a scientific treatise on the anatomy and behavior of animals. En route, he began having strange and disturbing dreams. It was Swedenborg's custom to keep a diary while he traveled, and so he recorded his dreams in its pages. These visions began the process of Swedenborg's spiritual awakening, which culminated in visions of angels, demons, heaven and hell. Swedenborg would largely abandon scientific pursuits and instead devote himself to recording the mystical visions that would dominate his legacy. The whereabouts of this journal were unknown for decades after Swedenborg's death, but it was eventually discovered in the Royal Library in the 1850s and subsequently published.

This is a practical guide to spiritual progress, stressing personal responsibility for overcoming negative traits by cultivating awareness of our base reactions and by applying the tools of Gurdieff's spiritual method. It can be used in group workshops or by the individual.

Eighteenth-century scientist-turned-theologian Emanuel Swedenborg had a deep understanding of the nature of reality that resonates both with mystical traditions and with artists and poets. In this volume, philosopher José Antonio Antón-Pacheco explores Swedenborg's views on heaven, angels, primordial language, and the spiritual history of humanity, in the process linking Swedenborg's thought to that of Jorge Luis Borges, Soren Kirkegaard, Henry Corbin, and Ibn 'Arabi, among others.

Available for the first time in English, Martin Lamm's work on the evolution of the philosophy of Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772) has stood as one of the standard works on the Swedish theologian since its original publication in 1915. Lamm shows that Swedenborg's scientific worldview was not changed by his later religious revelations -- that the two complemented and corroborated each other.

This first English translation contains two essays by the eminent French Islamic scholar Henry Corbin: "Mundus Imaginalis, or the Imaginary and the Imaginal" and "Comparative Spiritual Hermeneutics." Corbin called Emanuel Swedenborg "the prophet of the internal sense of the Bible" and compared his biblical symbolism to the Quranic interpretations of the great Islamic mystics.
