Synopsis Strategic Sustainable Procurement by : Colleen Theron

Procurement is playing an increasingly strategic role as a lever for sustainable development and social and environmental responsibility. Greater regulation on sustainable procurement in the public sector, including significant changes to the EU Directive in April 2014, are driving this change. This comprehensive guide to sustainable procurement by practising legal experts Colleen Theron and Malcolm Dowden distils key developments in EU and UK public sustainable procurement legislation, government guidance and policy; provides an introduction to sustainable procurement more broadly; provides case studies and practical examples on contractual aspects of procurement; shows you how to set up a sustainable procurement strategy; and contributes to the development of sustainable procurement policy. There is also increased emphasis on "clean" supply chains in the private sector, as best practice seeks to mesh with public sector requirements and reduce the risk that bids for public contracts might be undermined by adverse environmental impacts or social misconduct along the supply chain.Private sector companies should act now to establish best practice sustainable procurement principles to minimize the risk of litigation; several international standards are embedding the principles of sustainable procurement into their requirements. The book also offers practical examples of what sustainable procurement entails, whether the organization is bidding for public sector contracts, in need of meeting tender requirements, looking to obtain certification for a standard, or is simply seeking to improve its supply chain management and implement best practice.

Synopsis Developing a sustainable procurement strategy for Fashion Buyers in the German retail sector by : Mehtap May Isen

Inhaltsangabe:Introduction: 1.1 Subject and background: The global economic situation by its ever-changing business dynamics, such as ambiguities about the market, fierce competition, consumer behaviour and their changing preferences significantly increases Business Management responsibilities. Today as never before people are concerned with the environment and social issues; rapidly rising oil prices, increasing transparency and consumer interest in how products are made and where they come from, pressures Business Managers to create a more transparent and sustainable industry. Especially Purchasing Managers play a key role in using their procurement function to foster sustainable development. Referring to an international study that was carried out by Capgemini Consulting, sustainability efforts constitute the second important business driver on multiple supply chain agendas for 2010 (Haarman et al., 2009). Companies are rapidly adopting the term into their business or corporate social responsibility (CSR) reports. However, a review of the literature will show that the tem sustainability has been inconsistently defined. More specifically, most of the recent sustainability research has examined issues such as environment, human rights and safety in a standalone fashion (Seuring et al., 2008). Especially Purchasing Managers fail to take the emerged challenge of sustainability into a more integrative perspective: They often limit their purchasing policies on environmental considerations only. More precisely, there does not appear to be a corporate strategy that integrates environmental and social issues together into one purchasing plan. Hence, the sustainability challenges pressures Purchasing Managers to take the effect of their purchasing actions on the triple bottom line (TBL) into account, which refers to people, planet and profit. 1.2 Reason for choice of subject: The clothing and textile industry is massive. It is worth over US$1trillion worldwide, and contributes to 7% of world exports and employs nearly 26 million people (Tokatli, 2007). Paying a greater attention to fashion retailers, the high street dynamic pushed the retail prices for clothing extremely down. Sadly, consumers are demanding more of low price clothing and consequently fashion becomes more and more disposable. In lieu thereof silent sounds approach mainstream retailers; sounds from degrading working conditions in manufacturing facilities and threatening environmental [...]

Synopsis Understanding Sustainable Public Procurement by : Sanjay Kumar

This book explores the development of sustainable public procurement (SPP) as a strategic policy instrument to support decoupling of economic growth from environmental degradation and enhancing social well-being. Offering an in-depth case study of India’s SPP implementation trajectory, it discusses the challenges of integrating sustainability criteria into purchasing decisions, and examines policy choices and best practices to address them. It investigates the legislative, institutional, and governance framework for SPP in India, and identifies priority actions to accelerate wider uptake of SPP policy and practices. Furthermore, the book highlights the evolving role of SPP policies in response to emerging global mega trends, such as international trade, low carbon economy, circular economy, and Industry 4.0. Given its scope, this book appeals to scholars of economics, public administration, and environmental and social sciences, as well as to policymakers, practitioners, and advocates interested in steering transformational changes towards mainstreaming sustainable procurement practices in developing economies at the desired scale. "This book comes at the right time to compensate for the lack of in-depth works on the origins, nature and reality of the implementation of sustainable purchases.” - Farid Yaker, Programme Officer, Sustainable Public Procurement, Economy Division, UNEP, Paris, France. “...If you are a procurement or sustainability professional anywhere in the world, please read this book. It will change the way you think and feel about your profession.” - Shaun McCarthy OBE, Chair, Supply Chain Sustainability School, London, UK & Director, Action Sustainability, London, UK

Synopsis Sustainable Procurement by : Jonathan O'Brien

The business case for sustainability is clear and organizations are responding to the imperative to act. But with 50-70% of the change needed involving the supply base, procurement and supply chain functions are critical to success. Sustainable Procurement explains how procurement and supply chain professionals can develop existing best practice approaches to make supply side sustainability a reality. Based around the OMEIA® Sustainable Procurement process, this book provides a step-by-step and highly practical methodology that embeds sustainable procurement into existing proven procurement approaches. It also provides crucial new tools that equip and enable those in this field to drive highly effective supply-side sustainability. By exploring the current landscape and the business case for sustainability, Sustainable Procurement makes sense of how we can translate good ambition into prioritised grass roots level change. Guidance is offered on how procurement can help redefine what an organisation does based upon what needs to change in its supply base. There are extensive resources to help determine hot spot risk areas, assess suppliers, and determine and prioritise where to direct our precious resources. It also provides new models for 'sustainable value engineering' to help organisations transform what and how they buy. Written by leading procurement expert and best-selling author, Jonathan O'Brien, this practical guide outlines how to establish sustainable procurement as a key strategic enabler to reduce supply-side risk and drive action to respond to detrimental impacts in the supply base.
