Synopsis Sustainable Management of Cordyceps by : Jiping Sheng
This book examines the challenges of sustainably managing and conserving Cordyceps sinensis, a rare species of fungus largely grown in Tibet, currently on the brink of extinction. As one of the most expensive commodities in the world, particularly valued for its medicinal properties in China, the price of Cordyceps has risen by over 900% since the 1970s. This has made it a very lucrative resource for farmers, many of whom are struggling to produce sufficient food to sustain themselves. Naturally, this has led to overharvesting and, coupled with the impacts of climate change, the crop itself is now at risk. Rarely discussed in Western literature, this book provides a novel examination of Cordyceps, looking into the necessary changes needed to sustainably manage and conserve this important crop. Drawing on extensive field work conducted in Qinghai-Tibet, the book analyzes the supply chain, identifying key issues around production and considering the role and impact of relevant stakeholders. It discusses the necessary changes needed for a sustainable supply change, particularly to stop long-term overharvesting. The book then discusses the role of policy and the institutional management of this resource in China, as one of the main producers and consumers. It analyzes current policy instruments and argues for a more coherent policy which is better orientated towards conservation and sustainable management, rather than solely market regulation. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of natural resource management, environmental conservation, environmental policy, and sustainable supply chain management.

Synopsis Industrially Important Fungi for Sustainable Development by : Ahmed M. Abdel-Azeem
Fungi are an understudied, biotechnologically valuable group of organisms. Due to their immense range of habitats, and the consequent need to compete against a diverse array of other fungi, bacteria, and animals, fungi have developed numerous survival mechanisms. However, besides their major basic positive role in the cycling of minerals, organic matter and mobilizing insoluble nutrients, fungi have other beneficial impacts: they are considered good sources of food and active agents for a number of industrial processes involving fermentation mechanisms as in the bread, wine and beer industry. A number of fungi also produce biologically important metabolites such as enzymes, vitamins, antibiotics and several products of important pharmaceutical use; still others are involved in the production of single cell proteins. The economic value of these marked positive activities has been estimated as approximating to trillions of US dollars. The unique attributes of fungi thus herald great promise for their application in biotechnology and industry. Since ancient Egyptians mentioned in their medical prescriptions how they can use green molds in curing wounds as the obvious historical uses of penicillin, fungi can be grown with relative ease, making production at scale viable. The search for fungal biodiversity, and the construction of a living fungi collection, both have incredible economic potential in locating organisms with novel industrial uses that will lead to novel products. Fungi have provided the world with penicillin, lovastatin, and other globally significant medicines, and they remain an untapped resource with enormous industrial potential. Volume 1 of Industrially Important Fungi for Sustainable Development provides an overview to understanding fungal diversity from diverse habitats and their industrial application for future sustainability. It encompasses current advanced knowledge of fungal communities and their potential biotechnological applications in industry and allied sectors. The book will be useful to scientists, researchers, and students of microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture, molecular biology, and environmental biology.

Synopsis Environmental Humanities in the New Himalayas by : Dan Smyer Yü
Environmental Humanities in the New Himalayas: Symbiotic Indigeneity, Commoning, Sustainability showcases how the eco-geological creativity of the earth is integrally woven into the landforms, cultures, and cosmovisions of modern Himalayan communities. Unique in scope, this book features case studies from Bhutan, Assam, Sikkim, Tibet, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sino-Indian borderlands, many of which are documented by authors from indigenous Himalayan communities. It explores three environmental characteristics of modern Himalayas: the anthropogenic, the indigenous, and the animist. Focusing on the sentient relations of human-, animal-, and spirit-worlds with the earth in different parts of the Himalayas, the authors present the complex meanings of indigeneity, commoning and sustainability in the Anthropocene. In doing so, they show the vital role that indigenous stories and perspectives play in building new regional and planetary environmental ethics for a sustainable future. Drawing on a wide range of expert contributions from the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanist disciplines, this book will be of great interest to students and scholars of environmental humanities, religion and ecology, indigenous knowledge and sustainable development more broadly.
