Synopsis London by : Frank Tayell
Zombies. The outbreak began in New York. Soon it had spread to the rest of the world. People were attacked, infected, and they died. Then they came back. No one is safe from the undead. As anarchy and civil war took grip across the globe, Britain was quarantined. The British press was nationalised. Martial law, curfews and rationing were implemented. It wasn't enough. An evacuation was planned. The inland towns and cities of the United Kingdom were to be evacuated to defensive enclaves being built around the coast, the Scottish Highlands, and in the Irish Republic. Bill Wright, a Westminster insider and an advisor to a future Prime Minister, broke his leg on the day of the outbreak. Unable to join the evacuation, he watched from his window as the streets filled with refugees. He watched as the streets emptied once more. He watched as they filled up again, this time with the undead. Then the power went out. He is trapped. He is alone. He is running out of food and water. He knows that to reach the safety of the enclaves he will have to venture out into the wasteland that once was England. On that journey he will ultimately discover the horrific truth about the outbreak, a decades old conspiracy, and his unwitting part in it. This is the first volume of his journal. (73,000 words)

Synopsis Sacred Fire by : Ronald Rolheiser
When one reaches the highest degree of human maturity, one has only one question left: How can I be helpful?—TERESA OF ÁVILA Beloved author Ronald Rolheiser continues his search for an accessible and penetrating Christian spirituality in this highly anticipated follow-up to the contemporary classic, The Holy Longing. With his trademark acuity, wit, and thoughtfulness, Rolheiser shows how identifying and embracing discipleship will lead to new heights of spiritual awareness and maturity. In this new book, Rolheiser takes us on a journey through the dark night of the senses and of the spirit. Here, we experience the full gamut of human life, pleasure and fervor, disillusionment and boredom. But, as Rolheiser explains, when we embrace the struggle and yearning to know God we can experience too a profound re-understanding to our daily lives. “What lies beyond the essentials, the basics?” Rolheiser writes. “Where do we go once some of the basic questions in our lives have been answered, or at least brought to enough peace that our focus can shift away from ourselves to others? Where do we go once the basic questions in our lives are no longer the restless questions of youthful insecurity and loneliness? Who am I? Who loves me? How will my life turn out? Where do we go once the basic question in life becomes: How can I give my life away more purely, and more meaningfully? How do I live beyond my own heartaches, headaches, and obsessions so as to help make other peoples’ lives more meaningful? The intent of this book is to try to address exactly those questions: How can we live less self- centered, more mature lives? What constitutes deep maturity and how do we reach that place? And, not unimportantly, what constitutes a more adult, Christian discipleship? What constitutes a truly mature following of Jesus?” As the poet Rainer Maria Rilke suggests, “Live the questions now.” In Sacred Fire, Rolheiser’s deeply affecting prose urges us on in pursuit of the most holy of all passions—a deep and lasting intimacy with God.

Synopsis Fingerprints of God by : Barbara Bradley Hagerty
Articles about research on spirituality and the brain are usually written from the point of view that religious experience can be understood from a purely scientific perspective. Hagerty's (religion correspondent, NPR) book does not have this naturalistic or materialistic tendency. Rather, as both a reporter and a religious person, she seeks insight on spirituality and science while being open to the possibility that spirituality may still have a transcendent component. The book is interesting to read because the author has interviewed many scientists as well as many people who attest to having mystical or near-death experiences. In a way, the reader feels like a participant in Hagerty's own encounter with the various pieces of information and evidence, struggling with her to make sense of it all. Synopsis Shadows on the Wasteland by : Mike Stroud
When Sir Ranulph Fiennes and Dr. Mike Stroud ended their journey on foot across Antarctica in February of 1993, they were frostbitten and close to starvation. They had made the first coast-to-coast crossing of the continent, unsupported by men, animals or machines, and were too weak to continue over the floating Ross ice-shelf to open water. Ninety-five days earlier they had begun, pulling nearly 500 lbs each of essential food and fuel on sleds, and on the way they endured windchill temperatures as low as minus 185 degrees Fahrenheit. Mike Stroud, doctor, nutritionist and survival consultant to the British Ministry of Defense, is no stranger to the Polar regions. He was a member of the "In the Footsteps of Scott" expedition and has made several attempts with Fiennes to reach the North Pole from Canada and Russia over crumbling sea ice. But this record-breaking trek across Antarctica represented a physical and psychological challenge that has been likened to the first conquest of Mount Everest. In the tradition of the great expedition memoirs of Hillary, Scott and Byrd, Stroud's book is a compulsively readable account of what happens when habits and fears, compassion and resentments, fortitude and physical limitations are magnified in a struggle to conquer the most hostile landscape on the planet. Stroud's chronicle of the 1,350 mile traverse at the South Pole is as moving as it is surprising, revealing a no-man's land of the mind, a territory where psychological as well as physical stress interact to provide a challenge greater than the brutal landscape and unpredictable weather alone. Few will fail to be gripped by this exciting account of what is perhaps the most celebrated Polar trekof our time.
