Synopsis Survey of the State of the Art in Human Language Technology by : Giovanni Battista Varile
Languages, in all their forms, are the more efficient and natural means for people to communicate. Enormous quantities of information are produced, distributed and consumed using languages. Human language technology's main purpose is to allow the use of automatic systems and tools to assist humans in producing and accessing information, to improve communication between humans, and to assist humans in communicating with machines. This book, sponsored by the Directorate General XIII of the European Union and the Information Science and Engineering Directorate of the National Science Foundation, USA, offers the first comprehensive overview of the human language technology field.

Synopsis Essential Speech and Language Technology for Dutch by : Peter Spyns
The book provides an overview of more than a decade of joint R&D efforts in the Low Countries on HLT for Dutch. It not only presents the state of the art of HLT for Dutch in the areas covered, but, even more importantly, a description of the resources (data and tools) for Dutch that have been created are now available for both academia and industry worldwide. The contributions cover many areas of human language technology (for Dutch): corpus collection (including IPR issues) and building (in particular one corpus aiming at a collection of 500M word tokens), lexicology, anaphora resolution, a semantic network, parsing technology, speech recognition, machine translation, text (summaries) generation, web mining, information extraction, and text to speech to name the most important ones. The book also shows how a medium-sized language community (spanning two territories) can create a digital language infrastructure (resources, tools, etc.) as a basis for subsequent R&D. At the same time, it bundles contributions of almost all the HLT research groups in Flanders and the Netherlands, hence offers a view of their recent research activities. Targeted readers are mainly researchers in human language technology, in particular those focusing on Dutch. It concerns researchers active in larger networks such as the CLARIN, META-NET, FLaReNet and participating in conferences such as ACL, EACL, NAACL, COLING, RANLP, CICling, LREC, CLIN and DIR ( both in the Low Countries), InterSpeech, ASRU, ICASSP, ISCA, EUSIPCO, CLEF, TREC, etc. In addition, some chapters are interesting for human language technology policy makers and even for science policy makers in general.

Synopsis Knowledge Organization and Classification in International Information Retrieval by : Nancy Williamson
Learn step-by-step how to develop knowledge-based products for international use! Knowledge Organization and Classification in International Information Retrieval examines current efforts to deal with the increasing globalization of information and knowledge. International authors walk you through the theoretical foundations and conceptual elements behind knowledge management, addressing areas such as the Internet, multinational resources, translations, and information languages. The tools, techniques, and case studies provided in this book will be invaluable to anyone interested in bridging the international information retrieval language gap. This book is divided into four sections that address major themes for internationalized information and knowledge: “General Bibliographic Systems” discusses how bibliographic classification systems can be adapted for specific subjects, the problems with addressing different language expressions, and the future of these systems “Information Organization in Knowledge Resources” explores knowledge organization and classification, focusing mainly on libraries and on the Internet “Linguistics, Terminology, and Natural Language Processing” analyzes the latest developments in language processing and the design of information retrieval tools and resources “Knowledge in the World and the World of Knowledge” addresses the ontological foundations of knowledge organization and classification and knowledge management in organizations from different cultures With this book, you’ll gain a better understanding about the international efforts to globalize: the Dewey Decimal Classification the Library of Congress Classification the Universal Decimal Classification multilingual thesauri Web directories of education-related resources human language technology metadata schemas the North American Industry Classification Figures, tables, charts, and diagrams elucidate the concepts in Knowledge Organization and Classification in International Information Retrieval. Information educators and practitioners as well as specialists in classification and knowledge organization will find this book valuable for its focus on the problems of—and solutions for—information retrieval for specific linguistic, cultural, and domain communities of discourse.

Synopsis Human Language Technologies – The Baltic Perspective by : K. Muischnek
Computational linguistics, speech processing, natural language processing and language technologies in general have all become increasingly important in an era of all-pervading technological development. This book, Human Language Technologies – The Baltic Perspective, presents the proceedings of the 8th International Baltic Human Language Technologies Conference (Baltic HLT 2018), held in Tartu, Estonia, on 27-29 September 2018. The main aim of Baltic HLT is to provide a forum for sharing new ideas and recent advances in computational linguistics and related disciplines, and to promote cooperation between the research communities of the Baltic States and beyond. The 24 articles in this volume cover a wide range of subjects, including machine translation, automatic morphology, text classification, various language resources, and NLP pipelines, as well as speech technology; the latter being the most popular topic with 8 papers. Delivering an overview of the state-of-the-art language technologies from a Baltic perspective, the book will be of interest to all those whose work involves language processing in whatever form.

Synopsis The Future of Translation Technology by : Chan Sin-wai
Technology has revolutionized the field of translation, bringing drastic changes to the way translation is studied and done. To an average user, technology is simply about clicking buttons and storing data. What we need to do is to look beyond a system’s interface to see what is at work and what should be done to make it work more efficiently. This book is both macroscopic and microscopic in approach: macroscopic as it adopts a holistic orientation when outlining the development of translation technology in the last forty years, organizing concepts in a coherent and logical way with a theoretical framework, and predicting what is to come in the years ahead; microscopic as it examines in detail the five stages of technology-oriented translation procedure and the strengths and weaknesses of the free and paid systems available to users. The Future of Translation Technology studies, among other issues: The Development of Translation Technology Major Concepts in Computer-aided Translation Functions in Computer-aided Translation Systems A Theoretical Framework for Computer-Aided Translation Studies The Future of Translation Technology This book is an essential read for scholars and researchers of translational studies and computational linguistics, and a guide to system users and professionals.

Synopsis Designing Interactive Speech Systems by : Niels O. Bernsen
A description of the design and implementation of spoken language dialogue within the context of spoken language dialogue systems development. Using an applications-oriented SLDS developed through the Danish Dialogue project, the authors describe the complete process involved; and in so doing present several innovative practical tools, such as dialogue design guidelines, in-depth evaluation methodologies, and speech functionality analysis. Their approach is firmly applications-oriented, describing the results applicable to industry and showing how the development of advanced applications drives research rather than vice versa. For everyone working on the R&D of spoken language services, especially in the area of telecommunications.
