Part two of the book focuses on surgery specific system-based problems in geriatric surgical patients. The third part addresses many other important aspects of geriatric surgery including palliative and end of life care for the elderly, religious issues and the elderly care surgery, elderly with mental health issues, and nursing care of elderly patients. The fourth and final part describes the need for geriatric surgical care education and the components that are essential for the curriculum of current and future generations of students. Written by experts in the field, Surgical Decision Making in Geriatrics addresses patient selection, pre-operative considerations, technical conduct of the most common operations, and avoiding complications.

Synopsis Cancer and Aging Handbook by : Keith M. Bellizzi

A state-of-the-art, multidisciplinary approach to cancer and aging With the majority of cancers occurring in individuals over the age of 65 against a backdrop of an expanding aging population, there is an urgent need to integrate the areas of clinical oncology and geriatric care. This timely work tackles these issues head-on, presenting a truly multidisciplinary and international perspective on cancer and aging from world-renowned experts in geriatrics, oncology, behavioral science, psychology, gerontology, and public health. Unlike other books on geriatric oncology that focus mainly on treatment, Cancer and Aging Handbook: Research and Practice examines all phases of the cancer care continuum, from prevention through evidence-based diagnosis and treatment to end-of-life care. Detailed clinical and research information helps guide readers on effective patient care as well as caregiver training, research, and intervention. Coverage includes: Epidemiology of cancer in older adults, plus the unique physical, mental, and social issues involved Strategies and guidelines for prevention, screening, and treatment of older individuals with cancer The most common cancers in the elderly, including breast, colorectal, lung, prostate, and ovarian cancer Cancer survivorship in older adults as well as the all-critical issues of palliative care and pain management Emerging topics such as caregiver and family issues, different models of care, and cost considerations An essential resource for clinicians and caregivers as well as researchers interested in this evolving field, Cancer and Aging Handbook is also useful for public health professionals and policymakers who need to formulate services and allocate resources for the growing population of older cancer patients.

Synopsis Colorectal Cancer in the Elderly by : Kok-Yang Tan

As the population ages, clinicians are facing an increasing number of elderly patients with colorectal cancer. These patients pose unique challenges as they have more comorbidities and lower functional reserves. In addition, the treatment goals may differ from those in younger patients. This book discusses in depth the different aspects of management of colorectal cancer in the elderly. After the provision of pertinent background information on the normal physiology of aging, screening and diagnosis are discussed. Subsequent chapters focus on a range of issues associated with the surgical and perioperative care of these patients and with adjuvant treatment and palliative care. Each chapter provides helpful take-home messages in bullet point form, and numerous informative figures and tables are also included. The authors are surgeons, physicians, anesthetists, geriatricians, oncologists, and allied health professionals with extensive experience in the field.

Synopsis Cancer Surgery in the Elderly by : John D. Spiliotis

The significant advances in medical, surgical and social care during the last two decades in the western world have resulted in a considerable prolongation of life expectancy. However, on the other hand, aged populations present a high incidence of neoplasias ideally requiring surgical or multidisciplinary therapeutic strategies. The decision making for providing the appropriate surgical care in these patients is a difficult and multivariant task. This book examines cancer surgery in elderly patients, as well as a need for a more 'personalised' approach and a thorough discussion of their disease treatment and status of life.

Synopsis Diagnosis, Epidemiology and Treatment of Salivary Gland Carcinomas by :

Salivary gland carcinomas (SGCs) are a heterogeneous group of rare head and neck cancers made of more than 20 pathologic types. Although the treatments of the early or loco-regionally advanced disease are similar across the different entities, these malignancies have variable biological characteristics and clinical behaviors. These specificities, especially the pathologic type and, when available, the molecular profile, are taken into account while choosing the treatment for the recurrent/metastatic phase. In this context, only few druggable molecular targets have been tested so far and not all are available in clinical practice. However, due to the rarity of SGCs, clinical trials are challenging to conduct, and most of the available evidence comes from retrospective studies.
