Synopsis Success by Default by : Michael Solomon

BUT NOT FOR THE FUEHRER is Helmut Jung's story of personal survival in Hitler's Germany, through World War II, and in occupied Germany after the end of the war. In all of those times survival was the single key that kept him going, survival of the fighting, the famine, and the political oppression. This is not simply a war story. Yes, the war plays a big part within this story but Helmut was often at war with his own people just as much as he was with the Russians. It was often difficult to know who to fear the most, the enemy on the other side of the front lines or the enemy behind you who were making you fight. And fight he did, wounded twice, receiving special training as a sniper and as a demolitions expert, and receiving awards for his bravery. He was also captured by the Russians but was one of the very few who escaped. In addition, the SS held him as a spy after he escaped from the Russians. As a war story, BUT NOT FOR THE FEUHRER is truly outstanding but it is far more than just a war story. Mike Nesbitt

Synopsis Habits of Success: Getting Every Student Learning by : Harry Fletcher-Wood

For students to benefit from lessons, they must attend, listen and try their best. But at times, almost all teachers struggle to manage classroom behaviour and to motivate students to learn. Drawing on decades of research on behavioural science, this book offers teachers practical strategies to get students learning. The key is students’ habits. This book reveals simple yet powerful ways to help students build habits of success. Harry Fletcher-Wood shows how teachers can use behavioural science techniques to increase motivation and improve behaviour. He offers clear guidance on topics such as using role models to motivate students, making detailed plans to help students act and building habits to ensure students keep going. The book addresses five challenges teachers face in encouraging desirable behaviour: Choosing what change to prioritise Convincing students to change Encouraging students to commit to a plan Making starting easy Ensuring students keep going Workshops, checklists and real-life examples illustrate how these ideas work in the classroom and make the book a resource to revisit and share. Distilling the evidence into clear principles, this innovative book is a valuable resource for new and experienced teachers alike.

Synopsis Artificial Intelligence Planning Systems by : James Hendler

Artificial Intelligence Planning Systems documents the proceedings of the First International Conference on AI Planning Systems held in College Park, Maryland on June 15-17, 1992. This book discusses the abstract probabilistic modeling of action; building symbolic primitives with continuous control routines; and systematic adaptation for case-based planning. The analysis of ABSTRIPS; conditional nonlinear planning; and building plans to monitor and exploit open-loop and closed-loop dynamics are also elaborated. This text likewise covers the modular utility representation for decision-theoretic planning; reaction and reflection in tetris; and planning in intelligent sensor fusion. Other topics include the resource-bounded adaptive agent, critical look at Knoblock's hierarchy mechanism, and traffic laws for mobile robots. This publication is beneficial to students and researchers conducting work on AI planning systems.

Synopsis Ant by : Steve Holzner

Ant is the premiere build management tool for use in Java environments. Unlike traditional build management tools such as GNU Make, Ant is itself written in Java, is platform independent, and interfaces well with the utilities in Sun's Java software development kit (SDK). In addition to being platform independent, Ant is also independent of the integrated development environment (IDE) being used. IDE independence is important for open source projects (or other projects) in which the various developers might use different IDEs. Using Ant, Java developers can: define build chunks, the results that they must produce, and the dependencies between them; automatically retrieve source code from source control systems such as PVCs; build applications by having Ant compile the necessary source files in the proper order. Ant build files are written using XML---a well-established standard---so programmers using Ant are not required to learn yet another scripting language. They will likely already know XML, and will be able to leverage that knowledge. Ant is an open source project, and part of the Jakarta project. Jakarta is Sun's open source reference implementation for the JSP and Servlets specifications, and is part of the Apache group's work.

Synopsis Scenario Logic and Probabilistic Management of Risk in Business and Engineering by : Evgueni D. Solojentsev

This book proposes a uniform logic and probabilistic (LP) approach to risk estimation and analysis in engineering and economics. It covers the methodological and theoretical basis of risk management at the design, test, and operation stages of economic, banking, and engineering systems with groups of incompatible events (GIE). This edition includes new chapters providing a detailed treatment of scenario logic and probabilistic models for revealing bribes. It also contains clear definitions and notations, revised sections and chapters, an extended list of references, and a new subject index, as well as more than a hundred illustrations and tables which motivate the presentation.

Synopsis Logical Foundations for Cognitive Agents by : Hector J. Levesque

It is a pleasure and an honor to be able to present this collection of papers to Ray Reiter on the occasion of his 60th birthday. To say that Ray's research has had a deep impact on the field of Artificial Intel ligence is a considerable understatement. Better to say that anyone thinking of do ing work in areas like deductive databases, default reasoning, diagnosis, reasoning about action, and others should realize that they are likely to end up proving corol laries to Ray's theorems. Sometimes studying related work makes us think harder about the way we approach a problem; studying Ray's work is as likely to make us want to drop our way of doing things and take up his. This is because more than a mere visionary, Ray has always been a true leader. He shows us how to proceed not by pointing from his armchair, but by blazing a trail himself, setting up camp, and waiting for the rest of us to arrive. The International Joint Conference on Ar tificial Intelligence clearly recognized this and awarded Ray its highest honor, the Research Excellence award in 1993, before it had even finished acknowledging all the founders of the field. The papers collected here sample from many of the areas where Ray has done pi oneering work. One of his earliest areas of application was databases, and this is re flected in the chapters by Bertossi et at. and the survey chapter by Minker.
