Synopsis Structural Changes in West European Agriculture, 1950-70 (Classic Reprint) by : Cynthia Ann Breitenlohner

Excerpt from Structural Changes in West European Agriculture, 1950-70 In current prices the value of agricultural output increased for all West European countries during 1950 - 70, although the relative shares of the value of agricultural output changed little. The countries with the greatest increases in agricultural output tend to be livestock-based and, in general, economically prosperous. Output value tripled in France, West Germany, and the Netherlands during the past two decades. Western Europe in 1970 devoted over half its total land area to agriculture. Of the agricultural area, a little more than half was arable land and orchards. In Western Europe, the United Kingdom had the largest proportion of agricultural land to total land (80 percent in 1969) while Norway had the smallest (3 Percent in 1970) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Synopsis The Agricultural Economy and Trade of the Federal Republic of Germany (Classic Reprint) by : Cynthia Ann Breitenlohner

Excerpt from The Agricultural Economy and Trade of the Federal Republic of Germany Agriculture is not a highly profitable enterprise in West Germany. Farming contributes only 3 to h percent to gross national product, yet the agricultural sector employs nearly 10 percent of the labor force; thus, the average income of farmers is much lower than the average in other professions. The future of West German agriculture will not be especially bright unless there is progress in structural reform. More farmers need to leave the land, and the farms need to be enlarged to make better use of economies of scale. Synopsis From Old Regime to Industrial State by : Richard H. Tilly

In From Old Regime to Industrial State, Richard H. Tilly and Michael Kopsidis question established thinking about Germany’s industrialization. While some hold that Germany experienced a sudden breakthrough to industrialization, the authors instead consider a long view, incorporating market demand, agricultural advances, and regional variations in industrial innovativeness, customs, and governance. They begin their assessment earlier than previous studies to show how the 18th-century emergence of international trade and the accumulation of capital by merchants fed commercial expansion and innovation. This book provides the history behind the modern German economic juggernaut.
