A mother’s award–winning account of what it’s like to lose a daughter to a rare debilitating disease. One Strong Girl is a bold description of what it means to deal with deep sorrow and still find balance and beauty in an age steeped in the denial of death. At ten, India climbed the highest on the rope at gymnastics, yet by sixteen was so weak she was unable to even dress herself. The narrative follows the six-year fight for answers from the medical community. Finally, after the genetic testing of India’s DNA, it was discovered there were two mutations on her ASAH1 gene, a deadly combination. Today her cells are alive in a research lab at the University of Ottawa. This is a legacy that cuts both ways, a point of pride and pain. One Strong Girl is a story of what it’s like to outlive an only child. It describes the intensity of loving a dying child and most importantly, the joy to be found, even amidst the sorrow.

Starshooter spun, launching into a perfect back kick to her stomach. Stronggirl flew back, slamming into the wall. She moaned as she slid to the ground, trying to get back up. A foot to the side knocks her onto her back as hands grab at her and pin her to the ground. Fiesta stood above her. Stronggirl's eyes widened as she came up with an idea. As Fiesta raised her leg up high in the air, Stronggirl took a deep breath. She let out a Sonic scream as Fiesta's foot broke through her ribcage. Her vision tunneled as her friends clutched their now bleeding ears

This book will help you become a wiser, more determined parent with the easy to follow month by month parenting plans that lays out ways to make your daughter a stronger person. Remember a solid, intact parenting plan will have a significantly positive impact on a girl’s present and future wellbeing and offers countless benefits for both parents and children. In fact girls who grow up in homes where parents have strategies for success are less likely to experience a wide range of problems (academic, social, emotional, cognitive), not only in childhood but later on in adulthood as well. Always keep in mind that it is easier to build strong girls than to repair broken women!

Tough girls are everywhere these days. Whether it is Ripley battling a swarm of monsters in the Aliens trilogy or Captain Janeway piloting the starship Voyager through space in the continuing Star Trek saga, women strong in both body and mind have become increasingly popular in the films, television series, advertisements, and comic books of recent decades. In Tough Girls, Sherrie A. Inness explores the changing representations of women in all forms of popular media and what those representations suggest about shifting social mores. She begins her examination of tough women in American popular culture with three popular television shows of the 1960s and '70s—The Avengers, Charlie's Angels, and The Bionic Woman—and continues through such contemporary pieces as a recent ad for Calvin Klein jeans and current television series such as The X-files and Xena: Warrior Princess. Although all these portrayals show women who can take care of themselves in ways that have historically been seen as uniquely male, they also variously undercut women's toughness. She argues that even some of the strongest depictions of women have perpetuated women's subordinate status, using toughness in complicated ways to break or bend gender stereotypes while simultaneously affirming them. Also of interest— Madcaps, Screwballs, and Con Women: The Female Trickster in American Culture Lori Landay
