Synopsis Stresses in Shells by : Wilhelm Flügge

There are many ways to write a book on shells. The author might, for example, devote his attention exclusively to a special type, such as shell roofs or pressure vessels, and consider all the minor details of stress calculations and even the design. On the other hand, he might stress the mathematical side of the subject to such an extent that he virtually writes a book on differential equations under the guise of the mechanical subject. The present hook has been kept away from these extremes. At first sight it may look to many people like a mathematics book, but it is hoped that the serious reader will soon see that it has been written by an engineer and for engineers. In a theoretical subject such as this one, it is, of course, not possible to get very far with the multiplication table and elementary trigonom etry alone. The ma,thematical prerequisites vary widely in different parts of the book, depending on the subject. In some parts ordinary differential equations with constant coefficients are all that is needed.

Synopsis Stresses in Plates and Shells by : A. C. Ugural

This accessible text provides comprehensive coverage of both plates and shells, and a unique blend of modern analytical and computer-oriented numerical methods in presenting stress analysis in a realistic setting. It is distinguished by its broad range of exceptional visual interpretations of the solutions, applications, and means by which loads are resisted in beams, plates, and shells. Combining the current-numerical, mechanics of materials, and theory of elasticity methods of analysis, Stresses in Plates and Shells, Second Edition, offers an in-depth and complete coverage of the subject for students and practicing engineers.

Synopsis Stresses in Beams, Plates, and Shells by : Ansel C. Ugural

Noted for its practical, student-friendly approach to graduate-level mechanics, this volume is considered one of the top references—for students or professioals—on the subject of elasticity and stress in construction. The author presents many examples and applications to review and support several foundational concepts. The more advanced concepts in elasticity and stress are analyzed and introduced gradually, accompanied by even more examples and engineering applications in addition to numerous illustrations.Chapter problems are carefully arranged from the basic to the more challenging. The author covers computer methods, including FEA and computational/equation-solving software, and, in many cases, classical and numerical/computer approaches.

Synopsis Thermal Stress Analysis of Composite Beams, Plates and Shells by : Erasmo Carrera

Thermal Stress Analysis of Composite Beams, Plates and Shells: Computational Modelling and Applications presents classic and advanced thermal stress topics in a cutting-edge review of this critical area, tackling subjects that have little coverage in existing resources. It includes discussions of complex problems, such as multi-layered cases using modern advanced computational and vibrational methods. Authors Carrera and Fazzolari begin with a review of the fundamentals of thermoelasticity and thermal stress analysis relating to advanced structures and the basic mechanics of beams, plates, and shells, making the book a self-contained reference. More challenging topics are then addressed, including anisotropic thermal stress structures, static and dynamic responses of coupled and uncoupled thermoelastic problems, thermal buckling, and post-buckling behavior of thermally loaded structures, and thermal effects on panel flutter phenomena, amongst others. - Provides an overview of critical thermal stress theory and its relation to beams, plates, and shells, from classical concepts to the latest advanced theories - Appeals to those studying thermoelasticity, thermoelastics, stress analysis, multilayered structures, computational methods, buckling, static response, and dynamic response - Includes the authors' unified formulation (UF) theory, along with cutting-edge topics that receive little coverage in other references - Covers metallic and composite structures, including a complete analysis and sample problems of layered structures, considering both mesh and meshless methods - Presents a valuable resource for those working on thermal stress problems in mechanical, civil, and aerospace engineering settings

Synopsis Theory of Shell Structures by : C. R. Calladine

This book attempts to bring the essence of shell structures within the grasp of engineers. It tackles the fundamental question of how bending and stretching effects combine and interact in shell structures from a physical point of view; and shows that this approach leads to an understanding of the structural mechanics of shells in general.

Synopsis Tensor Analysis and Continuum Mechanics by : Wilhelm Flügge

Through several centuries there has been a lively interaction between mathematics and mechanics. On the one side, mechanics has used mathemat ics to formulate the basic laws and to apply them to a host of problems that call for the quantitative prediction of the consequences of some action. On the other side, the needs of mechanics have stimulated the development of mathematical concepts. Differential calculus grew out of the needs of Newtonian dynamics; vector algebra was developed as a means . to describe force systems; vector analysis, to study velocity fields and force fields; and the calcul~s of variations has evolved from the energy principles of mechan ics. In recent times the theory of tensors has attracted the attention of the mechanics people. Its very name indicates its origin in the theory of elasticity. For a long time little use has been made of it in this area, but in the last decade its usefulness in the mechanics of continuous media has been widely recognized. While the undergraduate textbook literature in this country was becoming "vectorized" (lagging almost half a century behind the development in Europe), books dealing with various aspects of continuum mechanics took to tensors like fish to water. Since many authors were not sure whether their readers were sufficiently familiar with tensors~ they either added' a chapter on tensors or wrote a separate book on the subject.
