Synopsis Sticks, Stones, and Shadows by : Martin Isler
What do the pyramids of Egypt really represent? What could have driven so many to so great, and often so dangerous, an effort? Was the motivation religious or practical? Illustrated with more than 300 photographs and drawings, this book presents an original approach to the subject of pyramid building. It reveals the connection between devices that served both a practical need for survival and a spiritual belief in gods and goddesses. It examines Egyptian technologies and techniques from the origins of pyramid development to the step-by-step details of how the ground was leveled, how the site was oriented, and how the stone was raised and placed to meet at a distant point in the sky. Here the author also asks and answers questions virtually ignored for the last century. He discloses, for example, the ancient use of shadows, now denigrated to the ornamental back-yard sundial, but once an important tool for telling the height of an object, geographical directions, the seasons of the year, and the time of day. He also reinterprets the ancient "stretching of the cord" ceremony, which once was thought to have only religious significance but here is shown as the means of establishing the sides of a pyramid.

Synopsis Sticks & Scones by : Diane Mott Davidson
Celebrated for her unique blend of first-class suspense and five-star fare, Diane Mott Davidson has won scores of fans and earned a place on major bestseller lists across the country. Now she dishes up another dangerously tasty treat of murder and mystery. For Colorado caterer Goldy Schulz, accepting a series of bookings at Hyde Castle is like a dream come true. It’s not every day that she gets to cook authentic Elizabethan fare--especially at a real castle that was brought over from England and reassembled stone by stone in Aspen Meadow. Goldy is determined that everything will go right--which is why, she figures later, everything went terribly wrong. It begins when a shotgun blast shatters her window. Then Goldy discovers a body lying in a nearby creek. And when shots ring out for the second time that day, someone Goldy loves is in the line of fire. Suddenly the last thing Goldy wants to think about is Shakespeare’s Steak Pie, 911 Chocolate Emergency Cookies, or Damson-in-Distress Plum Tart. Could one of her husband Tom’s police investigations have triggered a murder? Or was her violent, recently paroled ex responsible? With death peering around every corner, Goldy needs to cook up some crime-solving solutions--before the only dish that’s left on her menu is murder.

Synopsis The Famished Road by : Ben Okri
Winner of the Man Booker Prize: “Okri shares with García Márquez a vision of the world as one of infinite possibility. . . . A masterpiece” (The Boston Sunday Globe). Azaro is a spirit child, an abiku, existing, according to the African tradition, between life and death. Born into the human world, he must experience its joys and tragedies. His spirit companions come to him often, hounding him to leave his mortal world and join them in their idyllic one. Azaro foresees a trying life ahead, but he is born smiling. This is his story. When President Bill Clinton first went to Africa he quoted from The Famished Road, which has inspired literature, art, politics, and pop songs—and even been referenced in an episode of The Simpsons. A transformative story for all ages and all times, it means many things to many people. Few contemporary novels have aroused as much passion as this one. Indeed, twenty-five years after its breakout publication, the iconic story of Azaro’s travels continues to mesmerize new generations. For readers of Things Fall Apart or One Hundred Years of Solitude, this Man Booker Prize–winning blend of fabulism and gritty realism by the Nigerian author of Astonishing the Gods and Dangerous Love is a “dazzling, hypnotic” journey through Africa that “weaves the humblest detail with the most extravagant flight of fancy to create an astonishing fictional tapestry” (San Francisco Chronicle). Already considered a classic of world literature, it is “a masterpiece if ever one existed” (The Boston Sunday Globe).

Synopsis Sticks and Stones (Dragon Thief Book 1) by : Mac Flynn
Life is full of life-changing events. Obviously. Millie, however, never expected the change to come at the tip of a stick. One late-night walk has her face off against a trio of men intent on having some fun with her. The tables are turned when she stumbles upon a stick in the path, a stick with some interesting abilities. The men are sent packing and Millie stands tall with her prize and pride. Triumph turns to trouble as she's literally dropped into a new world. She falls into the strong arms of a masked rogue with dragon wings, and he places her in the charge of an old friend, the handsome and wealthy Count Benjamin Castle. He’s as mysterious as his acquaintance, and the heated looks he gives her reveals that his interest in her is more than just mere kindness. However, Millie’s only thought is to return to her own world, but they’re not the only ones searching for answers to her problem. Someone else wants to learn the secrets of traveling between worlds, and they’re not afraid to play dirty to get to the answer first. Their adventure leads them from the deepest sewers, to the sleaziest auction houses, and up to the highest heights of high society, and all the while Millie begins to wonder what her heart truly desires. The wonders of fantasy, fun, and magic were alluring, and the pair of men who called themselves her protectors intrigued her even more. As their journey takes them deeper into this new world, she must make a choice: leave it all behind or embrace the budding romance that promises to reveal a deep secret.
