Imagine a heart which has been ripped from a man's body, wrapped with thorns, pierced with a knife, and then placed on the man's chest; or a group of people who believe that wearing a small rectangle of wool next to their skin ensures that they will go to heaven - as long as it is brown wool and worn continuously. Although psychoanalysts have long investigated similar ideas and beliefs, they have ignored popular Catholicism, even though behaviour such as this occurs over and over again in the history of Catholic cults and devotions.

Nine-year-old Ira-Abel Rawles lives on Hook Farm in the village of Underwhelem. Next to the farm is Gore Woods, Ira’s sanctuary, overseen by Orlam, the all-seeing lamb’s eyeball who is Ira-Abel’s guardian and protector. It is true that Africa was the last frontiers of conquests by the colonial explorers and pirates, but there is nothing hard about learning from others who have been there to not make the same mistakes that characterized most nation builders. It is true that one of the banes of African politics is her numerous ethnic groups and the need to satisfy everyone, but we cannot fail to acknowledge that the world is changing pretty fast and that we need to adapt to those changes, so as not to be left in the dark.
