Synopsis Spin Dependence of Associated Production of a Prompt Photon and a Charm Quark at Next-to-leading Order in QCD. by :

A second order, O([alpha]2{sub s}), calculation in perturbative quantum chromodynamics is presented of the longitudinal spin dependence of the cross section for the two particle inclusive reaction p + p → [gamma] + c + [Chi] for large values of the transverse momentum of the prompt photon and charm quark. Differential distributions are provided for the spin-averaged cross section and for the two-spin longitudinal polarization asymmetry A{sub LL} at the energy of the Brookhaven Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. An assessment is given of the prospects for determination of the spin dependence of the charm quark density.

Synopsis Associated Production of W+ Charm in 13 TeV Proton-proton Collisions Measured with CMS and Determination of the Strange Quark Content of the Proton by : Svenja Karen Pflitsch

The associated production of a W boson and a single charm quark (W+c) is the only process in proton-proton collisions that directly probes the strange quark content of the proton. In this thesis, W+charm production is measured in proton-proton collisions at the LHC at 13 TeV, as recorded by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment. The analysis focuses on the identification of W bosons in their leptonic decay to a muon and a neutrino and charm quarks are tagged via the full reconstruction of D*-Mesons. The measured cross sections of W+c production are used, in combination with other relevant CMS results and the most precise HERA DIS data, in a QCD analysis to determine the strange quark content of the proton. The resulting strange quark distribution and suppression, with respect to the other light sea quarks, are in good agreement with those obtained in neutrino scattering experiments and extend their kinematic reach.

Synopsis QCD Higher-Order Effects and Search for New Physics by : Jian Wang

This book mainly investigates the precision predictions on the signal of new physics at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in the perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) scheme. The potential of the LHC to discover the signal of dark matter associated production with a photon is studied after including next-to-leading order QCD corrections. The factorization and resummation of t-channel top quark transverse momentum distribution in the standard model at both the Tevatron and the LHC with soft-collinear effective theory are presented. The potential of the early LHC to discover the signal of monotops is discussed. These examples illustrate the method of searching for new physics beyond what is known today with high precision.
