Synopsis Speeches, Correspondence and Political Papers of Carl Schurz, Vol. 2 (Classic Reprint) by : Carl Schurz

Excerpt from Speeches, Correspondence and Political Papers of Carl Schurz, Vol. 2 After I had introduced my resolution yesterday, Drake's nomination [as Chief Justice of the Court of Claims] came in and was, as is the custom when a Senator is nominated for something, at once confirmed, to which of course I raised no objection. But we have an under standing that he is not to accept the office, until our debate is over. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Synopsis Speeches, Correspondence and Political Papers of Carl Schurz, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint) by : Carl Schurz

Excerpt from Speeches, Correspondence and Political Papers of Carl Schurz, Vol. 1 Of his personal letters Mr. Schurz rarely kept copies, unless they touched some public or private question of special importance. Thanks to the all but invariable kindness and generosity of his surviving friends or their heirs, copies of many hundreds of his private letters have been made and preserved. A volume containing twelve of the best of his early speeches, 1858 - 64, was published by Lippincott in 1865; but it has long been out of print and is hard to find except in the largest libraries. Synopsis Speeches, Correspondence and Political Papers of Carl Schurz, Vol. 5 of 6 (Classic Reprint) by : Carl Schurz

Excerpt from Speeches, Correspondence and Political Papers of Carl Schurz, Vol. 5 of 6 As a loyal American citizen I feel in duty bound to make to you the following confidential communication. Early this morning I received a note from Count Al'cot informing me that he would be in this city during the day and requesting me to meet him at such time and place as I might designate - if possible during the forenoon. Having been for years pleasantly acquainted with Count Arco, I called upon him at the Albemarle Hotel on my way down town. He at once asked me for my Opinion on the present state of the Samoan business, adding that he intended to write to Count Bismarck to-day. I replied that as to all I should say I wished him to keep in mind that I could only speak for myself as a private citizen; that I had had no communication con cerning this subject with any one connected with the Government, and that I had only the official publications, the newspapers and my acquaintance with people of different classes as sources of information and Opinion. From my study of the matter it appeared to me that the Germans had committed the error common to civilized nations coming, in the pursuit of their material interests.
