Synopsis Spanish Colonial Literature in South America (Classic Reprint) by : Bernard Moses
Excerpt from Spanish Colonial Literature in South America No intelligent person is likely to deny the importance of ofiicial documents as the basis of a nation's history; but these docu ments do not tell the whole story. There are social activities, currents of national' thought, and waves of popular sentiment, which are not fully described either in laws or governmental proclamations. Tradi tion sometimes conveys a knowledge of these aspects of society, but tradition undergoes such modifications in the course of time that it does not render the same account to all later generations or centuries. Only what is written remains fixed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Synopsis Spanish and Portuguese South America, Vol. 1 of 2 by : Robert Grant Watson
Excerpt from Spanish and Portuguese South America, Vol. 1 of 2: During the Colonial Period The following account of the Colonies from which sprang the States of South America owes its origin to the want of such a work felt by myself some years ago. In 1866 I received the appointment of second Secretary to Her Majesty's Legation in the Argentine Republic and Paraguay. My previous experience having been in quite another part of the world, I had all to learn respecting the regions which I was about to visit The only book which had been recommended to me was Sir Woodbine Parish's work on Buenos Ayres. On reaching my destination, however, I found that this work was already out of date; I also found that there was a considerable amount of literature respecting South America. But this literature being partly in English, French, German, Dutch, Latin, or Italian, and partly in Spanish or Portuguese, was only accessible to persons possessing a reading knowledge of the above-named languages. Of two years in South America I passed one as Secretary at Buenos Ayres, and the other in a similar capacity at Rio de Janeiro. Synopsis Spanish and Portuguese South America During the Colonial Period, Vol. 2 of 2 (Classic Reprint) by : Robert Grant Watson
Excerpt from Spanish and Portuguese South America During the Colonial Period, Vol. 2 of 2 The appearance Of the Dutch as actors on the Brazilian stage arose, as might be expected, from the connection of the Low Countries with Spain and from that Of Spain with Portugal. Their success in attacking the sources of their enemy's supplies in the East led to the establish ment Of a West Indian Company, the chief Object Of which was to make conquests in Brazil. A fleet was fitted out under the command of Willekens, who had under him the celebrated Peter Heyne. The religious intolerance from which the Dutch had themselves SO terribly suffered at the hands Of their Spanish rulers had taught them to be tolerant in such matters towards others, and to this circumstance they were now indebted for much valuable information respecting Brazil, which they received from the Jews who had taken refuge amongst them. Synopsis Colonial Lives by : Richard E. Boyer
Colonial Lives offers a rich variety of archival documents in translation which bring to life the political and economic workings of Latin American colonies during 300 years of Spanish rule, as well as the day-to-day lives of the colonies' inhabitants. Intended to complement textbooks such as Burkholder and Johnson's Colonial Latin America by presenting students with primary sources -- the raw materials on which the facts in other textbooks are based -- this reader strives to illustrate the impact of issues such as race, class, gender, sexuality, culture and religion in the daily lives of both natives and colonists alike. The concerns, struggles and perspectives of the inhabitants of colonial Latin America are reflected in transcripts of civil and criminal court cases, administrative reviews, ecclesiastical investigations, Inquisition trials, wills, and letters the editors have included in this reader. Each document is prefaced by an introduction that places it in the social and political context of the period. The book also includes a glossary of terms and lists of suggested further readings. Most uniquely, the book offers helpful thematic cross-referencing sections and an index of themes which allow instructors to easily adapt the book to their courses and to assign readings according to the criteria of their own specific curriculums.

Synopsis Open Veins of Latin America by : Eduardo Galeano
Since its U.S. debut a quarter-century ago, this brilliant text has set a new standard for historical scholarship of Latin America. It is also an outstanding political economy, a social and cultural narrative of the highest quality, and perhaps the finest description of primitive capital accumulation since Marx. Rather than chronology, geography, or political successions, Eduardo Galeano has organized the various facets of Latin American history according to the patterns of five centuries of exploitation. Thus he is concerned with gold and silver, cacao and cotton, rubber and coffee, fruit, hides and wool, petroleum, iron, nickel, manganese, copper, aluminum ore, nitrates, and tin. These are the veins which he traces through the body of the entire continent, up to the Rio Grande and throughout the Caribbean, and all the way to their open ends where they empty into the coffers of wealth in the United States and Europe. Weaving fact and imagery into a rich tapestry, Galeano fuses scientific analysis with the passions of a plundered and suffering people. An immense gathering of materials is framed with a vigorous style that never falters in its command of themes. All readers interested in great historical, economic, political, and social writing will find a singular analytical achievement, and an overwhelming narrative that makes history speak, unforgettably. This classic is now further honored by Isabel Allende's inspiring introduction. Universally recognized as one of the most important writers of our time, Allende once again contributes her talents to literature, to political principles, and to enlightenment.

Synopsis The Vintage Book of Latin American Stories by : Julio Ortega
In The Vintage Book of Latin American Stories, Julio Ortega and Carlos Fuentes present the most compelling short fiction from Mexico to Chile. Surreal, poetic, naturalistic, urbane, peasant-born: All styles intersect and play, often within a single piece. There is "The Handsomest Drown Man in the World," the García Márquez fable of a village overcome by the power of human beauty; "The Aleph," Borges' classic tale of a man who discovers, in a colleague's cellar, the Universe. Here is the haunting shades of Juan Rulfo, the astonishing anxiety puzzles of Julio Cortázar, the disquieted domesticity of Clarice Lispector. Provocative, powerful, immensely engaging, The Vintage Book of Latin American Stories showcases the ingenuity, diversity, and continuing excellence of a vast and vivid literary tradition.

Synopsis South America: Its Lands, Its Peoples and Its Problems (Classic Reprint) by : Charles E. Chapman
Excerpt from South America: Its Lands, Its Peoples and Its Problems Take another factor. In 1810 there was no legitimate foreign trade at all, outside of the meagre trade with Spain. There was agreat deal of smuggling, but all of it together was small as compared to the volume today, . In 1905 the total foreign trade of all Hispanic America, north and south, was three billion dol lars - equal to the combined foreign trade of the United States and Canada! There are the figures for 1905. Does it sound to you as if that drummer reported properly? He reported that there was no sense in going in there; that there was nothing to it. I am supposed to say a little something about contemporary problems. Those countries are all republics and democracies in name. But in fact, in varying degrees to be sure, they amount to what we would call aristocracies. The families prominent in the colonial era are prominent today. They are the power behind the throne. In some of the countries where revolutions still occur they are the result of quarrels between different factions of the aristocracy. Synopsis The Cambridge History of Latin American Literature by : Roberto Gonzalez Echevarría
The Cambridge History of Latin American Literature is by far the most comprehensive work of its kind ever written. Its three volumes cover the whole sweep of Latin American literature (including Brazilian) from pre-Colombian times to the present, and contain chapters on Latin American writing in the USA. Volume 3 is devoted partly to the history of Brazilian literature, from the earliest writing through the colonial period and the Portuguese-language traditions of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; and partly also to an extensive bibliographical section in which annotated reading lists relating to the chapters in all three volumes of The Cambridge History of Latin American Literature are presented. These bibliographies are a unique feature of the History, further enhancing its immense value as a reference work.
