A flavour of this book ... This small disk is called Carmichael’s Amulet and it commemorates the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria by the dates 1837 and 1897. These are the dates of her 60 years reign. To the right can be seen a mould that is carved from wood. It seems to have been professionally made in a large block that is well finished and furnished with a hook for hanging up. The mould may have produced butter pats or terrines for a Victorian celebration. As well as the Diamond Jubilee dates it commemorates the Record Reign that Queen Victoria had achieved in 1896 after being monarch for longer than George III. These images were taken by the authors as this book was being written and so they do not appear in the text which summarises an enormous variety of Diamond Jubilee souvenirs. Inside you will find a unique view of Victoriana that was made to celebrate one event at the height of the powers of the British Empire. The souvenirs will give you a glimpse into Victorian creative ingenuity as well as the thinking and beliefs of people in 1897.

The specific concern of this collection is linking the use of media to the larger socio-cultural processes involved in collective memory-making. The focus rests in particular on two aspects of media use: the basic dynamics of mediation and remediation. The key questions are: What role do media play in the production and circulation of cultural memories? How do mediation, remediation and intermediality shape objects and acts of cultural remembrance? How can new, emergent media redefine or transform what is collectively remembered?

The Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Victoria was celebrated with great pomp and show in June 1897 throughout British India. Since the purpose of the advent of the Promised Messiah(as) was to propagate the Unity of God and His message, he found a way to serve those objectives at that occasion. He published the booklet Tohfa-e-Qaisariyyah on May 25, 1897. In addition to felicitating Her Majesty, the Promised Messiah(as) made the following points with great subtlety and wisdom: 1. Truthfulness of the Holy Prophet Muhammad(sa). 2. Truthfulness of Islam and its teachings that can bring about international peace. 3. A proposal for Her Majesty to organise a conference of great religions. 4. A strong plea for Her Majesty to clear Hazrat Isa(as) (Jesus) of the accusation of having been cursed. 5. An undertaking to show a sign of his own truthfulness, provided that Her Majesty would agree to accept his message in case of fulfilment – adding that he would accept death penalty if he is unable to show a convincing sign.

Both in life and death, Queen Victoria is among the most popular monarchs to be committed to film. Her reign was characterized by an explosion in media coverage that began to rely on images rather than words to tell her story. Even though Victoria has been labeled the "first media monarch," the sheer magnitude of her screen presence has been neither chronicled nor fully appreciated until now. This book examines the growth and evolution of Queen Victoria's on-screen image. From the satirical cartoons and silent films of the 19th century to the television shows, video games, and webcomics of the 21st, it demonstrates how the protean Victoria character has evolved, ultimately meaning many different things to many different people in many different ways. Each chapter looks at a facet of her character and includes analysis of how these media present Queen Victoria as a real person and shape her as a character acting within a narrative. Forgetful Remembrance examines the paradoxes of what actually happens when communities persistently endeavour to forget inconvenient events. The question of how a society attempts to obscure problematic historical episodes is addressed through a detailed case study grounded in the north-eastern counties of the Irish province of Ulster, where loyalist and unionist Protestants—and in particular Presbyterians—repeatedly tried to repress over two centuries discomfiting recollections of participation, alongside Catholics, in a republican rebellion in 1798. By exploring a rich variety of sources, Beiner makes it possible to closely follow the dynamics of social forgetting. His particular focus on vernacular historiography, rarely noted in official histories, reveals the tensions between professed oblivion in public and more subtle rituals of remembrance that facilitated muted traditions of forgetful remembrance, which were masked by a local culture of reticence and silencing. Throughout Forgetful Remembrance, comparative references demonstrate the wider relevance of the study of social forgetting in Northern Ireland to numerous other cases where troublesome memories have been concealed behind a veil of supposed oblivion.
